I bought this several years ago and have kept it rather than send it to a charity shop.
Monica Grenfell has a no nonsense, stoical approach to diet and beauty: basically, Monica takes no prisoners when she says that you either chose your waistline or a cream cake. She is, of course, correct: there are no shortcuts and you can't 'have your cake and eat it!'. The approach is quite reminiscent of an era when women did take more pride in their appearance and it is intended to be a bit of a culture shock/wake up call.
Monica is able to motivate and inspire: her narrative is seductive, in the sense, that she really goes 'all-out' to make your self esteem sky rocket. She is largely successful, particularly as you can see that she practises what she preaches: she looks amazing!
The book comprises motivational but blunt advice on dieting, nutrition, beauty and fitness. There is a section that shows a selection of exercises to tone up and improve posture. Monica advises that being active is greater indicator in health and fitness rather than the latest fad exercise craze. There is a diet plan that is intended to be followed for a fortnight: Monica prides herself on eating the 'real stuff' such as bread, cheese and cream. In her recipes, she limits quantities to maintain her figure. The diet is based on food combining, although this isn't a good choice for me, for many, it will work wonders I'm sure. I didn't like some of the recipes but those that included chicken and fish were excellent (I still use some of them now).
This book is quite holistic, in the sense, that as well as providing the motivational stuff and diet advice, there are sections that include advice on creating a good impression through, poise, body language and the imortance of posture. A brief section on deportment is included. This may seem dreadfully passe but, if you give it a chance, it will help you create an impression of grace and dignity.
A great book if you feel you've let yourself go and want to recapture your dignity and present a more 'ladylike' version of yourself.
