Amazon.co.uk Review

For those of you who have managed in the past to find the right pattern and the perfect new fabric, only to give up in frustration when the fabric doesn't behave like anything you've used before, Fabric Savvy is here to help. Author Sandra Betzina has wrestled with just about every fabric out there, and she's lived to tell in this excellent guide that's perfectly suited for beginning and experienced sewers alike.

85 fabrics are covered and appear in alphabetical order, with two pages devoted to each. For every material Betzina highlights a multitude of topics, including fabric facts (bulky/drape/breathable/how fabricated), suitability (types of projects), sewing tips, lay- out (and why it matters), interfacing, stitch length, seam finish, closures and hemming. The categories are thorough, as is the scope of fabrics addressed: waterproof breathables, tencel and lamé, to name a few, along with 14 types of silk and eight types of wool.

Colour photographs accompany the descriptions of fabrics and projects, while helpful illustrations further explain the techniques used. Finally, Betzina offers a glossary of fabric terms and a thorough listing of contact information for fabric and alternative pattern companies, making Fabric Savvy a must-have for any sewing enthusiast. --Molly McElroy --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful compilation, 18 Jun 1999
By A Customer
If I'd had this book to hand in the past, I might have avoided some of my dressmaking disasters. It is a wonderful aid to selecting fabric to suit a pattern, and to pre-treating and sewing the fabric. I particularly like the standardised layout which helps you to find information quickly on the page. Each type of fabric that is included has an inspirational photograph showing how it can be made up. It is not really the type of book to read from cover to cover (although I did do that - it was so unlike any other book I have seen and I didn't want to miss anything!) but you will definitely pull it off the shelf many times in the future and the information will not date easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for hardcore sewers, 19 Aug 2003
By
This review is from: Fabric Savvy: The Essential Guide for Every Sewer (Paperback)
Unfortunately, after looking at this book, I have discovered I'm not as hardcore as I thought. I tend only to use a few fabrics from this book, and doubt I will ever have a need for anything more... BUT this book has really helped me for when I do use these fabrics, and for that, I give it 5 stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 30 April 2008
This review is from: Fabric Savvy: The Essential Guide for Every Sewer (Paperback)
I found the advice for dealing with the fabrics repetitive and not specific enough. The photos seemed dated and did not show fabric characteristics clearly.
