5.0 out of 5 stars A surprise beyond the title, 27 Jun 2007
By
S. Penelope "Marnia" (Italy) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Fabric Landscapes by Machine: Decorative Stitching Styles for Quilted Scenes (Paperback)
The title could be misleading. This book offers not just decorative stitching styles but full instructions for making landscape quilts, and is very easy to follow even for the complete beginner. In my opinion, if you'd love to try your hand at landscape quilting but are rather in awe of the fantastic quilts produced by the experts then this is the book for you.

The author starts with advice on finding inspiration, making a pattern, getting started, and there are two very interesting, lengthy chapters on the design process and the design concept, with an easy but informative section on using colour as a design element. Also very good advice on how to make a quilt match the colour scheme of your house, including wallpaper, and how to incorporate your home decor fabrics in your quilt.

The next chapters then cover decorative stitches, threads and a wide variety of embellishing techniques, all of which are explained in a clear and easy to follow manner. Although the author makes good use of a computerised embroidery sewing machine, most things can be done on a machine which has just the basic decor stitches.

If you are still hesitant about going ahead with your own project, there are then four small sample landscape projects to get you started, the first of which uses only 8 different fabrics, simple but stunning, moving on to more complex pieces, none of which are too challenging even for a beginner.

There is advice on how to finish and frame your quilts, fine for smaller pieces, but there is not much on borders for larger quilts. There is a chapter on how to incorporate your work into a garment and there are full-size patterns for this.

I really like this book. As the back cover says, the steps are surprisingly simple with spectacular results.

5.0 out of 5 stars great wearable art ideas, 29 July 2001
By Ali Revere "seeking to understand" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Fabric Landscapes by Machine: Decorative Stitching Styles for Quilted Scenes (Paperback)
My book arrived just 2 days ago and I stayed up late scouring it from cover to cover (had to wait until the kids were in bed for quiet time). I'm not much into quilting, but love creating unique and unusual things, especially wearable art. This book is perfect. If you are a quilter you'll love the ideas to take your hobby to the next level. If you are more of a sewer, you'll be impressed by the detailed (and simple)instructions that make this form of quilting quick, easy and intriguing. To top it off, the book comes with 4 of the authors very own landscape quilt patterns plus another pattern for turning a lanscape quilt into a vest. The patterns alone are worth the cost of the book.

I ran out today and purchased fabrics to make a woodland scene and can't wait to get started. I also happen to be lucky enough to have a top of the line sewing and embroidery machine, so I can use it to further embellish my landscape quilt. But to be honest, with all the great ideas, techniques, thread and fabric suggestions the author has given, you do not need one of these fancy machines to make a work of art. This is a neat, neat book!

I got a few unexpected bonus' with this book. It has a pattern to make a vest with a landscape as well as several patterns. The work is explained and the color pictures were a help in understanding the methods outlined in the book. Good graphics as well as examples are in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Starting to Do Fabric Landscaps, 21 Oct 2008
By Michelle G. Reid "M. R." - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Fabric Landscapes by Machine: Decorative Stitching Styles for Quilted Scenes (Paperback)
Excellent directions from start to finish. Easy to understand, learn to select fabrics, make a pattern, put it together and embellish it. It's that easy. A wonderful book for the person who wants to do a landscape quilt and doesn't know where/how to begin. Good examples and pleasant reading. I puchased two additional copies for friends.
