Having read most of the early fables stories i took a brake a while back and I am just starting to get back into reading the saga again. I picked up this title after reading another fables stand alone Arabian Nights and days which i thought was fantastic and a great way to get back into the story.
I was hoping this crossover would live up to its title of being at least great but it ended up just being ok ish, the stories good with tongue very firmly in cheek type humor but i had real trouble with jack, who unfortunatly the book seems soley to be about. He is an idiot and just not very nice and i know he is supposed to be an arse but i find not having any empathy with the main character makes for a very hard read. Luckely Bigsby, Red and a few of the other fables are included in the story which keeps it interesting and it does slot into the saga very well.
I would read this if you are one of those fables fans who has to read every part of the fables story or if you have read jacks stand alone series and want to meet his fable friends.
I am glad i have read it but i will probably not read it again, unlike Arabian nights and days which i can read time and time again.

I can see why some people would be a disappointed with this book. Although labelled 'the great fables crossover' and actually being numbered as a Fables trade, it really is a Jack of Fables story. I read Jack of Fables and enjoy its fun, fourth wall breaking habits. I also quite enjoyed this trade but it is probably best for Jack of Fables fans.

The story revolves around the Literals beings that create the universe, Kevin Thorne unhappy that his creations have gone off and got their own lives, according to him Gepetto should never have been the evil adversary and Snow White shouldn't end up married to the Big Bad Wolf. The story is amusing it doesn't take itself seriously, there are battles with the Genres (Comedy, Western, Fantasy etc. personified) and Bigby undergoes a few humorous transformations but could have really been told just in Jack's book (with guest characters Snow and Bigby if needed). The new 'Blue' religion story in Fables really doesn't add anything to the story but I liked the addition of a new Jack Frost.

If you are a Jack of Fables reader than this is essential reading, but if you just read Fables you might want to skip this.

Fables is one of my favourite comic book series, I don't think any of the collected trade paperbacks has disappointed me. Until now. The first 11 books were about fighting the Adversary. Book 12 dealt with the fallout of the war, including setting up a very dangerous new enemy. Book 13 however goes off on a tangent, into a more existential threat. Why are the Fables themselves real? How can fairy tale characters actually exist in the normal Mundane world? The answer is the Literals, one of whom wants to wipe the slate clean and remove the Fables from existence.

This trade collects issues from both Fables and its spinoff series Jack of Fables. It obviously wants the original readers to buy comics from both series - maybe not enough original Fable readers were buying the spinoff. In this collection, Jack returns to the Fables while others take on the Literals. It's an extremely dull plotline. Most of it is spent in the Farm animals brewing up a new rebellion (this time a messianic one focusing on Boy Blue returning as a saviour), Jack trying to seduce the morose Red Rose (also v tiresome) and Bigby being transformed by the Literal enemy (funny at first, redundant after the 5th transformation). The final battle is far from epic or suspenseful.

We don't even get a clear idea of where the Literals came from, presumably this was covered in the Jack of Fables series, so you'd ahve to buy the other trades. I can only hope that with this plot wrapped up, we can get back to the new enemy, who is a much more intimidating and interesting character. I had heard this trade was bad, but bought it anyway for sake of completedness. Now I wish I had just tried to get it at a public library and saved my money.
