Fables is one of my favourite comic book series, I don't think any of the collected trade paperbacks has disappointed me. Until now. The first 11 books were about fighting the Adversary. Book 12 dealt with the fallout of the war, including setting up a very dangerous new enemy. Book 13 however goes off on a tangent, into a more existential threat. Why are the Fables themselves real? How can fairy tale characters actually exist in the normal Mundane world? The answer is the Literals, one of whom wants to wipe the slate clean and remove the Fables from existence.
This trade collects issues from both Fables and its spinoff series Jack of Fables. It obviously wants the original readers to buy comics from both series - maybe not enough original Fable readers were buying the spinoff. In this collection, Jack returns to the Fables while others take on the Literals. It's an extremely dull plotline. Most of it is spent in the Farm animals brewing up a new rebellion (this time a messianic one focusing on Boy Blue returning as a saviour), Jack trying to seduce the morose Red Rose (also v tiresome) and Bigby being transformed by the Literal enemy (funny at first, redundant after the 5th transformation). The final battle is far from epic or suspenseful.
We don't even get a clear idea of where the Literals came from, presumably this was covered in the Jack of Fables series, so you'd ahve to buy the other trades. I can only hope that with this plot wrapped up, we can get back to the new enemy, who is a much more intimidating and interesting character. I had heard this trade was bad, but bought it anyway for sake of completedness. Now I wish I had just tried to get it at a public library and saved my money.
