Product Description

"Fables" is the hugely imaginative story of a group of fairy tale characters exiled from their mythical homelands and forced into a secret existence in modern-day America. Featuring such familiar names as Snow White, Prince Charming and Bigby (formerly Big Bad) Wolf, this is hard-edged fantasy in the grand tradition of The Sandman. The war for the Homelands is over, and the "Fables" have won - but at what cost? As Gepetto surveys his new home, a terrible force is unleashed, the rebuilding and reconciliation process starts...and a Fable dies! Volume twelve of the award-winning fantasy series by Bill Willingham and regular artists Mark Buckingham ushers in a dangerous new era for the "Fables!"

After the other eleven Fables trade paperbacks were over - as well as the snowfall prequel - I felt the series had probably gone on long enough, and after number eleven - the fantastic war and pieces - Fables had come to the end of its natural storyline.
However, this twelth volume adds to the series by being a complete turnaround, introducing a great new villan, and completely destroying much of what has gone before - there are so changes and plot twists that the Fables barely get a chance to relax before their existence is threatened again.
The first feature is a short story with fantastic art by Mike Allred, and then a plot develops which shakes the very foundations of the Fable universe: I couldn't put it down and if you're a Fables fan not sure about whether to buy or not I can confirm that it is honestly the best Fables yet, even better than number eleven. However, if you're new to Fables I urge you to read the other graphic novels first. I can't wait for the next volume!

Volume 12 in the Fables series

The morning after the night before. The war with the Adversary has finished, and this book deals with the aftermarth whilst setting up a new status quo. However whilst all of the previous components that made this series such a treat are still in place, I havent "felt" this book as much as the others. The artwork is good with Mike Aldred stepping in for part. The previous story finished fairly completely and its clear was the original end of Fables, however this is the first volume to not make me want to buy the next straight away.

Perhaps the next book will bring it back to its normal excellent level.

After the events of the previous collection, I thought the best of the series was over due to the main antagonist and reason for Fabletown's creation been resolved. Therefore I was really impressed with how Willingham has used this closure to springboard the series forward with whole new threats and scenarios which strongly suggest the series has several years worth of stories remaining. The title of this volume is also very apt though as, despite the victories of the last story arc, this is where we see the fallout from all the sacrifices (and victories) with some major and downright sad developments for several of the main cast. Thanks to the great characterisation by Willingham and the expressive art, the developments are genuinely heart-felt though. If this is the start of the new direction, it could be that the best of the series is ahead, rather than behind it.
