This is one of those handy little things everyone should have at least one of, especially as practically everything charges from USB these days.

So, how does the FX Factory's USB Mains Charger stack up?

Well, it is fairly sturdy; the plastic isn't particularly nice but feels solid. There is a risk it is the type that shatters if dropped on a hard surface, but for regular travel use I doubt it would break, even in hold baggage. On the subject of travel, this is a multi-voltage charger, meaning you can take it to the US or Japan or anywhere else they use 100 volt current and still safely charge your phone or whatever.

The cable seats in well and doesn't fall out, which is a risk seeing as the socket is set on the bottom of the charger when plugged into the wall.

There are a few minus points. The blue charge light is searchlight bright, which makes having one of these next to your bed a bad idea, unless you're a child in need of a nightlight. It really does light up the room. The charger is also not very pretty and a little on the large side and knowing the amount of electronics inside it really doesn't need to be as big as it is.

The output current is standard USB: 1 amp and 5 volts, which makes it safe for all USB charged equipment. If you have an iPad you may want to look for a dedicated charger, since this is not strong enough to charge up an iPad that is turned on, but it will charge it if the iPad is off.

With a low price and a 2 year warranty I can't see any reason not to buy this charger - unless you want it for your bedroom.

I thought it would be useful to have one plug that could be used to charge various different items (kindle, iphone etc), especially when travelling as it means less to carry. I have charged both my kindle & iphone using it and as far as I can tell it works fine.

There is a very bright blue LED light though which was irritating as I plugged it in next to the bed to charge my iphone overnight & the light was bright enough to keep me awake. I can't actually figure out the point of having a light on there in the first place. As soon as you put the plug in (even if you haven't connected anything to it) the light comes on so it isn't to indicate something is charging. I wondered if the light would change colour or turn off when the item was fully charged (as the plug is supposed to prevent overcharging somehow) but that isn't the case either.

So, although the product works I have no way of being able to tell if it really does prevent overcharging. The plug itself is larger than I expected, by the time you have plugged in the USB cable I can't plug it directly into my wall socket (they are very low to the floor) so I had to use it with an extension cable. I expect I'd probably be able to find something that does the same job that is smaller & doesn't have the irritating light on it but if those issues wouldn't bother you then I'm sure you'd get along fine with this one.

This is a handy little accessory which charges all devices powered by a USB charging cable, such as mobile phones, digital cameras, kindles, ipods, etc. Of course, you do need the appropriate usb charging cable, but having just one charger is helpful if you travel a lot and want to cut down what you need to carry. As people have more and more electonic items, this could be a useful buy. Many people have complained about the light, which is quite bright, but I find that is an annoyance with most chargers. It could, to be honest, have been a less obtrusive place and perhaps the manufacturers will consider that in the future.

This is a basic, straightforward USB to mains converter plug whose outer is high shine black plastic. Just pop your USB lead into this instead of the computer, plug in to the mains and you're all set. Handy for things like iPods, iPhones, and the All New Kindle that come with a USB lead, but no mains charger. It's not the smallest adapter of its type (a section on the back seems mostly hollow), but isn't so large that it blocks other items from being plugged in next to it e.g. on a surge protecting multiway socket board. A very bright blue LED, claimed to be a charging indicator, appears on the back of the plug. This comes on whenever the adapter is plugged in to the mains.

There's no instruction leaflet (it really doesn't need one!), just lists of bullet pointed item description, features and electrical specs printed on the box. The adapter box proclaims that the product has two years warranty - but there's no further detail of this such as a website to register your purchase or limitations of the warranty, simply a bricks and mortar address for the supplier.

So far this has charged everything I have thrown at it. iPod classic, iPod nano, iPod shuffle, TomTom Go720, HTC Desire and iPhone 16GB. For good measure I tried a tried some older gear (Nokia n80, Nokia n95, HP PDA, Fujitsu PDA and a bluetooth GPS device) I had hanging around and all showed as charging. The batteries were all a bit dodgy, so i couldn't fully test them, but I am confident it would do the job.

The reason some chargers of these types don't always work is to do with the output current. On an old Nokia I had and an earlier iPod if the output current wasn't high enough then the device simply wouldn't charge. No danger of that with this, there is a full 1000mA, more than enough for the most needy devices.

My only grumble is that the blue LED indicator light is extremely bright. It can easily light up a bedroom if you are charging overnight. I haven't marked it down for that little point, but it is worth mentioning so you will know to put it in a different room if a single point light source is likely to annoy you when settling down!

Build quality is solid one piece unit and looks as though it will take a fair bit of wear and tear before the casing starts to fail

Bottom line. It does the job it claims to do, it is robust and good value for money
