I go through periods of trying new releases by new artists... and normally I am left disappointed. The first MTB CD (How Long)was recommended to me and I couldn't get hold of a copy so I bought this instead, along with some other stuff. The other stuff was for the most part in keeping with my opening statement. So...

Dear God, what a fantastic CD... great songs, wonderful singing and very accomplished playing. It had me smiling from track one right to the end!

Please, please buy a copy, we need music and artists like the MTB to continue and release more quality recordings to relieve the mediodcre!

If you like excellent guitar driven quality Adult Rock, then get a copy and tell your friends to do the same...

Your Friend...

PS: Have since bought How Long and that is great too.

Never having heard of Michael Thompson and his band, Future Past, turned up in my recommendations and, listening to a couple of snapshots, I went ahead and purchased the album - and any regrets - nope, just the odd reservation as I still cannot, after quite a number of plays, understand some of "twee" numbers thrown in!
The opening track is an absolute killer, hitting it's stride within moments and hitting you straight between the eyes. The riff, the singing and the production quality just showing what a formidable band we have here - and certainly, on this track alone, beggars the question why they are not more played on the airwaves?
Can't Be Right and Future Times continue the rocking but now coming more into the Mike & The Mechanics sounding zone - nothing wrong with that as it shows quite a degree of maturity - but then it's the likes of Beautiful Mystery and Can't Miss that take us off in the twee direction, which had me pressing the "skip" button. But this is only minor niggling as this album has quality in abundance!
So, if you like to rock without too much in the way of raw edges, then you won't go far wrong giving this a spin - especially if you can pick it up at a knock down price - certainly looking at the earlier album How Long which is commanding very high prices due to scarcity!

Michael Thompson Band is a new rising group at the melodic rock scene, which is very promising if I judge from their works in this first cd. What has really impressed me about this album is that the all the songs, one by one should become hits. Thank you Amazon for your suggestion to include this album in my music collection.

Inventive West-Coast AOR by the reformed "Michael Thompson Band" 24 April 2012
By Nikiforos V. Skoumas - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
"Future past" is the second, brand new album by the "Michael Thompson" band, released by "Frontiers Records". Over twenty years past their debut "How Long", sought after session guitarist Michael Thompson has reinvented his own AOR project subsequently delivering old school fm rock with an undeniable west-coast feeling.

The line up features lead singer Larry King, bassist Alan Berliant, drummer Khari Parker and Thompson on guitars and keyboards. Despite its subtle-melodic nature, "Future Past" bares various mood swings throughout its 11-song track list; a more thorough play reveals that the song structures that put together these tracks are far from straightforward or simplistic-there are various twists and turns to be found within the rhythm patterns as well as changes in the key of the song. Clearly you can expect a similar songwriting approach as found on Jimi Jamison's latest solo album "Crossroads Moments"-obviously Thompson leans towards westcoast soft rock which results in entirely different output, yet the approach/mentality in crafting songs is very similar.

Clearly the protagonist element on "Future Past" are the vocals, and Thompson has wisely chosen to accompany the vocal lines/melodies rather than directing them with his own playing. "High Times", "Future Past", "Beautiful Mystery" and "End Game" are some of the highlights found on this second effort of MTB. Overall if you are a fan of `80s oriented west-coast adult oriented rock but enjoy the challenge of inventive songwriting, "Future Past" is an ideal proposition.

Excellent Progressive AOR! 14 April 2013

I had never heard the Michael Thompson Band when I sampled this album FUTURE PAST but just the samples made me want to purchase the album. I am a guitarist & Christian song writer myself and found this albums lyrics were positive and uplifting. The instrumentation and playing is excellent as well as a great production. The album is definitely great AOR and just good rock'n'roll in the vein of Styx,Journey,Kansas,Stryper and many others. It has an excellent challenging message that is not overbearing or offensive but sounds Christian in origin, very positive! I'm looking forward to MTB's next album but have listened this one every chance I get.
