There is a very interesting idea trying to get out in this book.

A remote island stuck in a heck of a storm. Strange goings on. A cast of mainly unlikeable characters with their own agendas, weaknesses and strengths. Unusually for this genre, the hero is a rather weak man who makes questionable decisions that rebound on the whole group. The military are not depicted in a particularly heroic way. The ladies are an odd bunch. Beautifully set up for a keep-them-guessing plot with no real sense of who will make it through and who will fall foul of the creatures. Some interesting possibilities about who the real 'baddies' are and who the real 'creatures' are.

But, oh boy does this need to be edited properly. The plot really suffers from sections that add nothing or go nowhere. When you get a run down of who has released a particular song while you're in the middle of a page that's supposed to be building tension you know there is a problem. Some of what happens is telegraphed so extensively that I found myself wishing the author would just get on with the 'surprise' so that the story could move forward. And don't get me started on the number of typos, grammar and continuity issues. I had to make a real effort to continue to the end.

So why two stars? Because this could be a good book if it lost about 30 pages and was tightened up. I'm guessing that a sequel is already in the pipeline and, depending on price, I'll probably buy it. I'm just hoping that the author takes the time to properly revise the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lycanthropic awesomeness 30 Oct. 2012

What's not to love? A gripping story, well written with characters as diverse as they are fleshed out, from the hard nosed Army commander, to the almost hapless hero. This book is a rare gem in the field, a monster who is genuinely terrifying and the meat sacks trying to deal with it.

I loved this book, a real page turner with some laugh out loud moments not to mention some truly grizzly scenes. The werewolf is like a tank with razor sharp claws, unstoppable, lethal and very very hungry. The heroes are many, and the body count high, but it is the characters themselves that shine through. Some you will love, some you will feel sorry for and a few you will come to respect. This is the sign of a good story, when you invest in the characters as people.

If you like a good story, well written, buy this book. I gave it five stars because this story is well crafted and I love a good werewolf shoot em up. I am really looking forward to more from this author. Excellent first book, now hurry up and finish the second one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots to love about the full moon. 4 Jun. 2012

What a fun read! I read the Amazon preview and just had to know what happened next and 99c later I'm perfectly satisfied. The pacing was fast and kept me interested. What I love most about this book is the 'voice' of each character. I really enjoyed each personality (even the sleazy guy). Each figure was well represented and I could visualize what they look and sound like based on great depictions and character driven dialogue. Overall just a fun read that was so detailed it played out in my mind like a fun action/Jurassic Park movie. Classic literature? no. Fun guilty pleasure? yes. Hoping to read more from this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been a 5 start book, but... 28 Oct. 2013

I enjoyed this book, which surprised me since I'm not into this genre, but it was a fast moving book that propelled you to want to keep reading. I give it a 3 star rating instead of a 5 because of all the grammatical errors, such as writing personal instead of personnel, she instead of he and he instead of she, plus a lot of missing words. There were also some run-on sentences, and sentences that were clumsy, but all in all this book is worth the 99 cents. Mr. Yates has a lot of talent, an extremely creative mind, but he needs a better editor to improve the flow of his work. Kudos to you, Mr. Yates, for making me jump out of my comfort zone. Despite the lower rating because of all the grammar stuff, I truly enjoyed this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like A Movie Script 29 April 2013

The way this book is written lends itself to being written as a screenplay. It's depth of characters and story are a true testament to the author's obvious love of the werewolf genre. i can't wait to see what other gems he can produce!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but too long 2 Feb. 2014
By Scrappydawg - Published on Amazon.com

This story was very good with action throughout. But I almost deleted it only halfway through because of how long the author made this thing drag out. Once again, very good werewolf horror and a real page turner but just like King and sometimes Koontz,...too much put into describing everything in specific detail. You'll find yourself skipping ahead as you realize you're on the third paragraph just describing a tree,...or damaged vehicles etc.
