Product Description

From Amazon.com

This live recording from 1980 matched U.S. fusion guitar heavyweights Al DiMeola and John McLaughlin with Spanish guitar whiz Paco DeLucia. The result, a dazzling technical display, also earned jeers as the international summit of world-class finger-wigglers by critics who felt it was long on chops and short on heart.

John McLaughlin's importance to the development of the jazz fusion scene can't be overestimated: as the guitarist on Miles Davis's seminal Bitches Brew and A Tribute to Jack Johnson, he was the first significant guitarist of the electric jazz era; on his own, he brought power rock, spiritualism, and lush orchestration to the scene via his Mahavishnu Orchestra. DiMeola, the most commercially successful next-generation fusion guitarist, achieved stardom with Chick Corea's group Return to Forever and on his own records. DeLucia, virtually unknown in the U.S., is a fine flamenco guitarist, and it is that orientation more than anything that colors Friday Night: even when playing straightforward non-flamenco compositions, the phrasing and sensibility lurks behind every note. Still, the passion of the music is frequently marred by the participants' inability to play at anything but the most breakneck pace. --Fred Goodman

dont be put off 2 May 2006
Format:Audio CD
Dont be put off by words like virtuoso, technical prowess or even jazz.

If you have even the most remotely open mind when it comes to music you will find the playing and the pieces on this CD breathtaking in their accessibility, humour, warmth, virtuosity (yes), beauty and musicality.

Lots of it has a flamenco feel and its the often hypnotic rythmn of that genre that ensured this would never have become (as far as non jazz fans are concerned) a bit of a jazz-geek love-in.

Its one of THOSE albums, where you put it on the best stereo, crank up the speakers, turn off the lights, close your eyes and lose yourself, over and over again, hearing new things every time.

The audience appreciation adds to the pleasure of listening to what was obviously an incredible night, listen to this and you will, like me, wish you'd been there.

The Best! 15 Sep 2003
Format:Audio CD
I've been playing guitar since the age of twelve. I'm now 40 and after listening to this, I'm thinking about giving it up! What's the point anymore? I've gone from being 'fair' to being 'atrocious' in 60 minutes.

If you like great live virtuoso guitar, buy it!

"ACCOUSTIC SHRED" 11 Jan 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This CD was recommended to me by a neo-classical virtuoso (electric) guitarist, and having listened to it, I can see why he likes it. The "Jazz" sticker on the front of the CD case is slightly misleading. Although the contents of this album do have jazz traits, this is unlike most jazz I have heard, and I would consider it more "Accoustic Shred" (the term "shred" borrowed from the instrumental electric guitar music genre in which virtuoso musicians 'show off' their skills). The first song in particular is a good demonstration of this. Those looking for perfect composition should probably listen to the version of Rio Ancho on Paco De Lucia's 'Antologia' album, as it is less of a vehicle for demonstrating speedy playing and more an exercise in good composition. However, the 11 and a half minute long version on 'Friday Night...' is a more spontanious affair. Paco and Di Meola tear up their fretboards with awe-inspiring speed. Composition is not completely overlooked, but in my humble opinion it takes a back seat to blurred licks and plenty of tremolo picking. As the live recording can testify, at several points the playing becomes so intense that the crowd can barely contain themselves and erupt in a frenzy of cheers and whoops. Personally, I didn't feel that the rest of the songs (there are only 5 altogether!) were quite as impressive... although the 'Fantasia Suite' is worth a listen. In short, I would recommend this album to most fans of instrumental guitar music (if only for the impressive technique it contains), but also to anyone who likes their music with classical, flamenco and jazz elements.
