The first edition of French's Index, published over 80 years ago, aimed to help the clinician in the differential diagnosis of any condition encountered in any medical specialty or surgery, that may be seen in general or hospital practice. For this 13th edition that aim remains the same. Completely revised, with new editors, new contributors and new illustrations, French's Index is as essential for today's doctors as it has been for those of previous generations.

The earliest possible diagnosis of a patient's disease is desirable, and it is important for the physician to be able to differentiate between the various diseases to which the presenting symptoms may be due. In this respect, French's Index has no parallel. Arranged alphabetically and based on the symptoms with which patients present to the physician, it offers a succinct and well-illustrated aide-memoire which will be invaluable to the undergraduate in the clinical years and to trainee and established doctors in general and hospital practice. Completely revised, with new editors, new contributors and new illustrations, French's Index is as essential for today's doctors as it has been for those of previous generations.

Product Description

A fitting tribute to its first author.
British Medical Journal

This is an amazing book...For general practice this can be a real gem, providing information which may not be easily found or quickly accessible in a general textbook. This book still has a lot to offer and hopefully will continue to produce offspring for future generations of doctors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide for medical students 16 Nov 2012
By Tank86
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is fantastic for medical students needing help with differentials for patient cases and portfolios. Studying for finals, I also feel the detail is at the right level for this and I have found it useful in the clinical context when faced with different symptoms. I have given this 5 stars as for this purpose as I feel it meets the criteria extremely well.

2.0 out of 5 stars not that great 22 July 2009
I had hoped to find a very detailed reference book, having perused an edition from the 1970's. This will be great if you are a medical student but isn't a postgraduate text, and doesn't have some of the things you will find in the simple old oxford handbook.

4.0 out of 5 stars Differential Diagnosis Book 2 25 Aug 2010

Still a very useful book like its predecessor since the 1920's!

Would be better with expansion on the basic mechanisms and scientific basis of each symptom or sign.
2.0 out of 5 stars DIfferential Diagnosis 21 Dec 2009
By Linda B. Lindquist - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I had used this text 25 years ago and found the differential diagnoses helpful. In reviewing the updated revised text, it does not seem as complete as needed for today's medicine. There appear to be better resources available.
