I wasn't expecting a lot from this. It's only a pound or so more expensive than the cheapest DTV boxes, but claims to offer the extra feature of recording too. I must say I'm pleasantly surprised. It records onto SD card or pen drive, with the 16GB card I've put in allowing up to around 13 hours of very high quality playback.

It needs a bit of careful setting up to get it recording properly. To record, you have to switch the epg into weekly mode by pressing the green button, then select the programme you want to record by pressing select. This takes you into the Timer sub menu, where for some odd reason the default action is just to wake up the box for the programme you have selected. If you move down the menu to 'wake-up' and cycle through til the display shows 'Recorder', then press Select, the box shows a message to say it's been updated. This actually means the recording has been scheduled. Thankfully these settings are then saved, so future recordings are simple.

You can schedule up to 7 recordings, providing there's enough space on your card. The box needs to be left on to record, but obviously not the TV.

It records in mpeg2 format, and once the recording is on the card it can be played back from the DTV box, or in any other device (PC, DVD player) which has a USB input. It also means you can archive programmes by simply copying them onto your PC from the card and either saving them to hard disk or copying them onto DVD.

It's tiny, so is very unobtrusive, and comes with a remote contol breakout and small but usable remote control. No batteries supplied so grab a couple of AAAs before delivery. It's simple to plug in and it collects all the available channels easily.

There's a fair bit hidden inside the menu system, including the ability to play back movies in many formats, including XVID/DivX.

The only downside is that it's not particularly easy to navigate, and playback of recordings is strangely hidden under 'Disk Management' If it wasn't for the need to have some experience of how these things work I'd have given it 5 stars, but for the money, it really is a bit of a bargain.

This device really is a mixed bag, so if you are looking for an easy to use, well made, reliable product, then look elsewhere. This is the bottom of the pile cheap territory. After a few months I've recorded hours of footage, and most of the time it works, but others it doesn't. The pre-record setting is a gamble as I have had it start to record then switch over to another channel and record that instead. Other times it records poorly and you cannot watch it, or it simply doesn't record at all. I am guessing that it is not very well programmed for the job it was intended to do. Other problems such as it being not very user friendly at all and I also cannot get teletext to work at all. It also suffers from the dreaded "no information available" syndrome in which it doesn't inform you of what is on now and next as you switch channel, which is not an uncommon problem as most set top boxes that I have used have also had it. The TV guide is also poor as it takes an age to check what is on because it takes so long to load any information, I have lost patients with it many a time and given up after only three channels in. To sum up I'd say that if you want a cheap set top box that can record and don't mind a few annoying niggles here and there, then I recommend this product, but if you are looking for a proper piece of kit then buy a more expensive model. Ideal really as a stand-by unit.

I got these (two of them) as replacements for 2 Digifun scart receivers I had bought for 2 small bedroom and kitchen TVs. They just plugged straight into the scart socket of the TV but sometimes came loose when the TVs were turned backwards and forwards. I have found these replacements great. Yes, a bit of time needed to understand how they work, but not long really. And they work fine. They sit flat on the surface behind the TVs so any TV movement does not affect them. Only real problem I have is recording is a bit hit and miss so if you are buying to do a lot of recording you may get frustrated. However for kitchen and bedroom TV digital receivers they are great little boxes at a great price. Hoever there is no scart lead included so you might like to order one at the same time. I got mine in Amazon for £1.79 (no postage) and they work brilliantly. I would also mention that when I contacted Digifun about my original purchase and the problems I was having they could not have been more helpful. Great products and great service.
