The revision of this best-selling text for a junior/senior course in Foundation Analysis and Design now includes an IBM computer disk containing 16 compiled programs together with the data sets used to produce the output sheets, as well as new material on sloping ground, pile and pile group analysis, and procedures for an improved anlysis of lateral piles. Bearing capacity analysis has been substantially revised for footings with horizontal as well as vertical loads. Footing design for overturning now incorporates the use of the same uniform linear pressure concept used in ascertaining the bearing capacity. Increased emphasis is placed on geotextiles for retaining walls and soil nailing. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

I am quite pleased with J. Bowles' previous edition (4th), but unless you are familiar with or solely use the metric system of units, I would recommend the 4th Edition (1988). It contains the same basic information, and includes both US and metric (in parenthesis) units.

Great book for dipping into the wealth and depth of information. Has a lot of information in one book to stop you looking through all the textbooks you may have. Not really suitable for learning from during your degree, as it is not presented in a fashion to highlight the basic essentials. Though I have used it almost weekly for work so far.

Contains a floppy disk! I don't have a floppy drive on my current computer so haven't had a chance to check it out yet. However, the descriptions in the book lead me to believe that geotechnical programmes have moved on.

Although the text was published some time ago, it is still an excellent resource.

This book is a handy reference for the practitioner. The fifth edition has an international appeal with calculations and problems in SI units. Its a good read for advanced students as well.

There are a few inevitable mistakes and typos however this should not distract a keen reader who wants to master Foundation analysis and design. The MS-DOS programs supplied with the 5th edition are quite useful as well although I have only used a few of them.
