5.0 out of 5 stars Too short 24 Aug. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
...well, not that short, but that gets my only criticism out of the way, which is that I was left wanting more.
This is a book of several parts - dietary prescription, industry insider revelations, a cancer survival triumph story and a nail-biting cycle race narrative.
As a whole, this book might not have worked - and, on first reading, I thought it took a few chapters to find a consistent voice, but ultimately it's an absolutely fantastic page turner.
The most obvious comparison is with Rich Roll's Finding Ultra and, if you liked that you'll like this, but I think this is the better book: it's funnier for one thing!
Just buy it - have you ever seen more 5* reviews?

5.0 out of 5 stars Cutting the crap 1 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I must admit I'm biased because I'm a huge fan of the podcast and everything I've learned from listening to that. And whilst its a relatively slim book all the core Vinnie principles are here. Calorie in/Calorie out doesn't work. Regular exercise. Just move your body. Stay away from sugar and grains. In a world where we are constantly bombarded with messages, data, advertisements and spam Vinnie keeps it simple and if you follow the principles as laid out in this book I can't see how you could fail but to lose weight and get significantly fitter. I just hope this guy ends up getting the platform he and his message deserves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Guide to Life! 28 Jun. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was recommended to me by a friend, and being British I hadn't really come across Vinnie before. I recognised myself in the first chapters, I am that person who has tried so many diets and failed miserably. The advice in this book is so simple, yet so life-enhancing I can't wait to get started. Sounds dramatic but that's how I feel. Vinnie is funny, highly motivated and has literally been to hell and back to find out how to live your life with honesty and guts. I read this book in one sitting, because I was hooked. Highly recommend to anyone who wants the answers of how to lose weight, how to embrace life and how to stop letting our modern lifestyle wreck our health. Go for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fitness for fun 8 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is so refreshing. A no nonsense approach to diet and exercise. Common sense coupled with years of experience and a healthy and angry disdain for the snake oil salesmen of the health. And diet industries. Also a very moving and inspiring personal story. Since diagnosis with type 2 diabetes I have followed close to Vinnie's approach and have lost 4 stone and reduced my sugar levels from frightening to normal , no medication at all now, just diet and exercise, and it's advice like Vinnie's that keeps me at it. Stay well.

If you listen to Vinnie's podcast, then you will know his No Sugar No Grains approach (which I follow also), his personality shines though his words, if only all similar books were as honest!

I just found the book, whilst informative, a bit lacking in depth or 'dirt' if I was honest, especially for anyone with already a basic level of knowledge. The print quality on my edition was poor leaving the photos resembling black and white grainy images from my old school books. That said, I believe Vinnie self published so it's a great effort overall and I for one wish him luck.

4.0 out of 5 stars Laughed my bum off! 16 Nov. 2013
By Kinsey
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
So glad I discovered this book. It's a nice relaxed introduction to the ideas of ditching sugar and grains.
Now, I'm not sure how effective it'll be if this is your first introduction to the idea. I've already been eating this way for over a year, after having done my own research. But I've seen how some people's eyes glaze over when you throw a million studies at them and this would be a great present for the friend/family member who just needs a book that gets right to the point. And this book made me laugh. I haven't read through a book this quickly in ages, I just couldn't put it down and I didn't want it to be over.

I read Fitness Confidential upon recommendation from a friend. I am not a fan of fiction, preferring fact based narratives... This compelling tale was not quite auto-biographical but a long way from being a text-book and had me hooked from page one.

Vinnie Tortorich uses personal experience, amusing anecdotes and moving stories of both triumph and adversity to deliver very simple but compelling insight into a nation's health (or lack of it). He shows us who we have been lead down the same path repeatedly whilst dispelling many of the myths that are perpetuated via the mass media. He encourages us to `cut the crap' and to think for ourselves. He isn't selling or endorsing anything above sensible lifestyle choices and using fact-based rationale. This is refreshing in itself.

I am British, however all of Vinnie's stories and life-lessons are relatable, particularly as British culture becomes increasingly Americanised. Also, as an amateur endurance athlete, there was much in the authors' life-experience that I could relate to. Chasing down those demons when the fuel tank is empty: doing things not because they are easy, but because they are hard: having everyone around you think you're crazy: The elation of the finish and the crushing defeat of the inevitable failures.

As America's angriest trainer, Vinnie does not hold back and I loved it. I was consumed by it and only put it down to recharge my kindle. If you care about your health, whether you are a sports person or not, I cannot recommend it enough.
