Book Description

The last time you walked into a diner, did you even suspect that the owners could be watching you? Analyzing your order? Checking you for drug or alcohol abuse? Sizing up how delicious your blood might be?

Maybe you should.

Driven by a need for human blood and a love for modern technology, Jovan and Ivana opened a diner. Humans enjoy made-to-order fast foods in a funky atmosphere with free wi-fi and complimentary drink refills, with techno music lightly drifting from the jukebox. And after Jovan clinically draws blood from the healthiest of the humans, the vampires drift in for their feast. Who will they choose next? The solitary man gnawing on a turkey burger, or the arguing father and son?

A short story (just under 5,000 words) that is first in THE VAMPIRE DINER 7-book series. Book 2, BEGUILE, will be released December 2014. An excerpt follows:

"The girl was as delicate of an eater as she was a drinker, taking tiny bites from the tuna melt, peering out the window as she chewed, trying to avoid looking at the staff any more than she had to, acutely aware of the trouble she’d caused. Jovan would leave her a little blood. Enough to make sure she survived."

5.0 out of 5 stars Intro 11 Jun. 2014
By Brianna - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a short introduction for what's to come in this series. A short 5 chapter story meant to create a perfect setting for what promises to be a good vampire story. It has all the spice, thrill and horror of picturing vampires mingling with humans. The setting is placed in a dinner, a place where humans come to have a treat and become a treat. I am not sure what comes next, but for sure the end of this introductory short story made me wonder how the story will go on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! 11 Jun. 2014

Father is Book One in The Vampire Diner Series. It’s a short story introducing Jovan and Ivana, modern day vampires that prey on customers eating at the diner. It’s well-written in a way that makes the plot believable. I like the way the author has imagined how vampires may have evolved. In this story, they do not operate exactly the same as a century ago. Clever and unpredictable, with a feeling of suspense throughout. This is not a comedy, although there is occasional humor. In Chapter 5, Ivana warns that “Humans will start noticing.” Jovan replies back, “Nonsense! They aren’t that smart and they don’t really believe in us anymore.” I thought that was pretty funny. At the end of Chapter 4 and into Chapter 5, you realize something else is going on where trouble is coming. I’m looking forward to finding out in the next book in the series, Beguile. What a great book! I really enjoyed reading it.
4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and Fun 10 Sept. 2014

I really like the names Jovan and Ivana. The idea of vampires opening up a hip little after hours diner to find good blood donors is clever. I would love to see more character development with this story. If this is indeed a teaser, I would enjoy listening to the full version. It seems to have a more mature and even slightly humourous aspect and less of a YA feel to it. It was good and I'd like to hear more.
Al Kessel has a nice voice. He was smooth with great flow and a nice easiness in his tone. I really like him in this role and find it to be a good match. I look forward to hearing more from him.

I'm a big fan of Vikki Lawrence's work and her ability to captivate readers in just a short story. This was a really great introduction to this short story series that makes me excited for the rest to come. It's a modern day take on vampires and Jovan and Ivana have a unique way of choosing their next meal. They find a healthy, fit choice from those who visit their diner and the customers get much more than they bargained for. Really enjoyed this and look forward to reading more!
3.0 out of 5 stars A real tease 17 Aug. 2014

This is a really short teaser book, gives you a hint of the world and characters. If it were food I would call it an amuse-bouche, a taste of things to come.

Not a lot to review here, but it definitely has me intrigued about the reset of the series! Here's hoping a full book will release soon. I love the idea of Vampires running a diner and that is how they get blood donations.

All single POV, which makes things limited. I would love to see things switch up in a full book and get a taste of other characters as well. Give us a broader picture to view.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Al Kessel, who has a great read. I thoroughly enjoyed his tone and pace in this all to brief read. He has a great quality to his voice that lends itself to the character. Terrific job of keeping voices consistent and distinct, especially during the dialogue between two males characters.
