I've bought this fast track self learning book for my daughter's fella for his birthday. He's a musical chap so will appreciate it! I've bought him this. . .

http://www.amazon.co.uk/SWAN-POCKET-BLUES-DIATONIC-HARMONICA/dp/B003IU9SJI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333118714&sr=8-1

to go with it from here too.

The book is a great starting point to enable you to get a decent sound/tune out of your harp! It teaches you the basics of reading musical notation, enough to give you a good understanding if you hadn't known before. There are scales to practice so you can get to know your harp and what each hole does! It shows you hand and mouth positioning and how you can get different sounds from shaping the hands/inside of your mouth, a-la Orange Blossom Special! Choo! Choo!

There's plenty of short well known songs for you to learn in tab form. Which is basically playing by numbers, making it easier for you! There's also a cd with 72 songs on there for you to play along with. It's okay learning a song but actually listening to it and how it should sound makes a big difference so the cd is a massive help here.

I would say that after reading this and most of all with practice, practice, practice he will be knocking a decent tune out in a fortnight! Also try searching for harmonica lessons on YouTube as there's loads on there!

I actually play a bit myself and can definitely recommend this cracking little book!

I bought this book for myself mainly because it promises to teach basic music theory, which it does in a very simple way.

I also wanted to know HOW to play the harmonica properly. My father used to play well and left me his harmonica many years ago. It reproaches me whenever I come across it.

I was delighted to find myself playing recognisable tunes within a few hours of opening the book.

I got so enthused I wore myself out with the blowing and the drawing of breath in the right places.

Next day I put the CD on and without the harmonica, tried breathing in and out as marked in the music... its tricky and I have a new respect for those who play professionally. I also got some idea of timing and note notation... so a very useful tool.

Greatly recommended.

Great way to start 7 Mar 2004

This is a great way to start learning the harmonica. You'll need a Diatonic in the key of C, such as a Lee Oskar. (Don't buy a book with an included harmonica; those harmonicas are usually crap. A good one is only about $20.)

The book teaches notes, harmonica tabulature, reading music, some bends and chording and has a decent selection of tunes you'll recognize. It includes a CD which is very useful for hearing what the harp SHOULD sound like as well as music to practice to.

My only gripe is that I already know how to read music and find the inclusion of tabs all the way through a bit intrusive. But it made learning the harmonica faster and easier than I expected.
