Fake Review 17 July 2003
Format:Paperback
The first volume of the immensely popular series by Sanami Matoh I am sure that many shonen-ai fans have jumped for joy with the licensing of this series by TokyoPop.

First of all this book is a shonen-ai romance, for those who dont know this term it means a male x male romance. Secondly in the last volume of this series (vol 7) the content becomes more explicit with 'yaoi', which basically means NOT for people under 18 years of age, sorry kiddies.

This series focus is on two New York detectives, and their painstakingly slowly developing relationship. Dee Laytner-an in your face dont care about the consequences kinda guy. He is continually getting himself and his partner into trouble with the boss and the situations around them, and Ryo "Randy" Maclean, a good by the book cop that is until he as partnered with Dee.

Other characters that are introduced are the street kids Cal (Carol) and Bikky who get themselves into less than desirable situations. Then later on Diana and Berkley Rose who cause conflict between the main romace.

This series contains plot twists and turns that are unexpected. It is a mix of comedy romace and action and you will find yourself wanting more even if action isn't your usual scene. The relationship between Dee and Ryo is lovely, as are the relationships between the kids and the adults, though there is a heavy dose of comedy thrown in with Dee and Bikky. There is also a heterosexual romance between Cal and Bikky.

Lastly the artworkork in this series is to die for. Each scene is detailed and well thought out, the characters dont continually wear the same clothes and expresions, unfortunatly there are no colored inserts as far as I am aware but this doesn't detract from the enjoyability of the book.

If you like shonen-ai also try 'Demon Diary' 'Banana Fish' and 'Gravitation' and for shoujo-ai 'Revolutionary Girl Utena'

Fantastic book! 25 May 2004
Format:Paperback
Volume 1 starts with you being introduced to the handsome new partners in crime (investigation that is) Randy/Ryo and Dee. And during there first 2 cases, you meet the recurring characters of Bikky and Carol, who are wonderful street-wise kids with attitude.
Fake is brilliant! It is such an beautiful combination of cop drama and romance/comedy. Dont think for a second that you get some soppy love story. The characters are engaging and dynamic, and with such fast paced action, you cant help but love them. The romance is beautiful because I really think that the appeal lies in the fact that the characters are very equal, strong and independant men, which makes a change from the usual couples you find across shoenen-ai. I'd well recommend it to anyone. If you're not into man+man it doesnt matter, give it a chance because the storylines keep you so involved. Plus, you cant help but enjoy the Bikky Vs.Dee relations. High drama and comedy, intertwined with a beautiful romance. Top notch!

By Larunya
Format:Paperback
Let me make this clear. I've never been into crime as a book genre. Just a mention of "The Bill" or any cop-shop drama on the T.V. sends me rapidly hurtling towards the remote. So when I bought Volume 1 of Fake to quell some of my summer boredom, I did not expect to find myself totally gripped by it!

Volume 1 mixes in a varied smattering of crime drama, humour and romance as well as being eye-catchingly beautiful in terms of art. We follow the investigations of Ryo and Dee into murder and mania-and each other! Bikky and Carol also appear to truly anchor Fake's plot. By the end of the book, I can guarantee that you will love all of them-well I can't imagine anybody not being amused by JJ-and will be dying to watch how the relationship between Ryo and Dee (and Carol and Bikky) progresses.

So in short, unless you're really anti-yaoi, go for this manga. It will not disappoint!
