5.0 out of 5 stars Retro but still killer, 11 Aug 2006

I thought I was over this retro-house sound but these guys breathe new live into the whole synthdiscopunkelectro thing with an exceptionally well-constructed mix. A blast to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very classy., 20 Nov 2006
By Mitya (Nottm., UK) - See all my reviews
No need for introduction or wider context setting here - instead let's get to the point and establish that this CD is stunning A mix hasn't made this much impact on me for a long time. The mixing, the track selection and the progression through the shape of the mix is perfect. The balance between raw 80's-style clunkiness is complimented by grooves, beats and just plainly and simply 'interesting' sounds.

Listing the highlights is futile, since it would be quicker to name what isn't one. The singer on NY Ponyclub's effort rams her Bob Dylan vocal style (or is she trying to be Chilli Peppers' Anthony Keidis?) for a little too long for my liking, and speaking of vocal styles, Inflgranti's Bang Bang owes much to the vocal style established by The White Stripes. Special mention must go, though, to Who Made Who's Hello Empty Room, a funny track with multi-interpretational words and a vocal style that just makes you sit up and listen; in our house we were walking around for days afterwards shouting "I!", "You!" (you'll understand when you hear it). Moving on, Midnight Man's Shadows is the pick of the album for me. If anyone knows a tune which glides along quite so effortlessly and with such cool bass and vocals, I'd love to hear it.

The ending is firmly in the mould of the 'calmly put the toys back in the box and take stock' type of ending; Cut Copy's Going Nowhere and Dream Sequence are dreamy and ambient and sound like they belong together.

The best Fabric I've heard since Andrew Weatherall - Cut Copy really cut it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hugely enjoyable, apart from a few poor choices, 22 Jan 2008
By Niall O'Shea (Manchester, Lancashire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Agree with Aaron, basically. It's a very fun mix, very 'human' with lots of hummable, head-noddable moments. There's a dodgy section around track 17/18 that's just unpleasant 'ironic' disco-electro with some guy deadpanning Madonna lyrics followed by someone yelping German pop. Not big. Not clever. The highlight for me is the last but outro, a Cut Copy track of strangely ambient, lop-sided house. Well worth the entry fee of £7.
