Listening to the music on this well-filled disc, one is reminded of various other composers such as Elgar, Strauss, Rachmaninov..not to mention a few less illustrious names; and yet D'Erlanger (who was a Baron and a successful banker as well as being a composer) manages to weld the disparate influences into well-crafted, effective (and affecting) music that shouldn't fail to appeal to all lovers of late-romantic orchestral music. The main work on the disc is the piano concerto, which, in its time was in the repertoire of such pianistic giants as Moiseiwitsch, Iturbi and Pouishnoff. Like the rest of the music on the disc it is expertly performed and recorded here. At times I felt I was listening to a concerto that might have been written for one of those gorgeous old black and white movies by a film composer of the highest quality, but then I have a weakness for that sort of thing and, if you have too, you will, doubtless, enjoy listening to this disc as much as I have done. I hope that some enterprising record company will record, one day, D'Erlanger's opera based on Tess of the D'Urbervilles.

just about know the composer's name, but when I heard Sursum Corda on an early morning Radio 3 programme I immediately warmed to this late Romantic elegantly crafted music. D'Erlanger was of mixed German/French parentage but long resident in London so Elgar, Massenet and Brahms are all influences.
Particularly at download price well worthe exploring
