2 of 2 people found the following review helpful By Barry McCanna TOP 500 REVIEWER on 7 July 2013
Format: Audio CD
The title of this set is an excuse to market a selection of music from The Jazz Age. The recordings are for the most part by black bands, many of which are familiar, so let me concentrate on those less so. "Tin Roof Blues" is an obscure 1923 Paramount recording, both "Perdido Street Blues" and "Bucktown Stomp" are small group recordings featuring Johnny Dodds, and "I Know that You Know" was the first recording by clarinettist Jimmie Noone's Apex Club Orchestra. Bessie Smith sang "St Louis Blues" against the unlikely combination of Armstrong's muted cornet and Fred Longshaw's harmonium, and she was accompanied by a contingent of the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra for "Alexander's Ragtime Band". "Jazz Me Blues" is the Wolverine's 1924 recording, and Bix was present also on Hoagy Carmichael's 1930 recording of "Georgia on My Mind". Given the age and rarity of some of the originals, sound quality is variable but should not be a problem, The liner note is in French, and the tracklist contains a number of typos, but the CD is distinguished by a deco design by Paul Rogers.

Already purchased a second copy for a friend who loves ragtime. I can listen to this over and over in my car.

Very unusual music to ones 'Modern Ere. However I liked it as it was refreshing after some of the current "Pop" offerings.
