More About the Author

Born with a wanderlust that keeps her moving, Julia Stagg has followed her restless feet to Japan, Australia, the USA and France. She has spent the majority of her time as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language but has also dabbled in bookselling, pawnbroking, waitressing and was once 'checkout-chick' of the month at a supermarket in South Australia.

In 2004, a love of cycling and the mountains, combined with a strange desire to take on a business she knew nothing about, saw her move to the Ariège-Pyrenees region of France with her husband. For the next six years they ran a small Auberge and restaurant, learnt French the hard way and discovered that they could spend lots of time together without killing each other. Over the years running the Auberge, the inhabitants of Fogas began to shape themselves in her mind. While Julia was hanging out yet another load of washing, Annie Estaque would lean over and rasp in her ear, warning about a change in the weather. While she was frantically trying to prepare food for twenty, Christian Dupuy would be in the background grumbling about his mother's inability to produce a meal for two. And as she served pastis to tourists at the bar, Mayor Serge Papon would be watching with a sharp eye as he drained his own glass of the opaque liquid.

Before long their stories began to take form and in between hectic summer seasons, Julia managed to sneak the time to get them down on paper. And in doing so, the commune of Fogas came to life, inhabited by people who are purely fictional but dominated by a stunning landscape that is grounded in fact.

A Fête to Remember is the fourth book in Julia's series of tales from the Pyrenean commune of Fogas. Over the years I've become a big fan of Julia's work and the anticipation and excitement to once again feast my eyes on the goings on of this community had me all tingly inside and from the first sentence I knew I wasn't going to be disappointed as I was already laughing. The ease at which my mind slipped back into Fogas is testament to Julia's skill as a writer, as despite it being a year since I read the last book I was immediately back and feeling very much at home. Although I do recommend reading the previous books this book could be enjoyed with no prior knowledge of the commune.

We join the residents as they try to fight the bigger boys in order to keep the village independent, but whatever the outcome things look set to change for everyone and more than one character gets more than they were hoping for. There is love, but not quite romance, mysterious appearances, disappearances and an anonymous supporter whose identity leads to suspicion and trouble. We find ourselves in a community fighting together but at the same time where friends and family members were often at odds and emotions were running high. The intense passions often had my heart racing and my mind screaming at the pages. The food, the mountain scenery and village life were described to perfection making me laugh, cry and hungry. Knowing a bit about village life in France and now dipping my toes into local politics I can't fault Julia's research into the French bureaucracy facts that make her fiction so plausible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Booktrail to Fogas, France 14 July 2014
The fourth in the series of the Fogas commune in France – a delightful and fictional commune set in the French Pyrenees

Aah mon dieu - we are back to Fogas! And Bienvenue if you have not been before as well it is a delightfully frustrating place to live for the residents..aah the characters you will meet and the scenery you will see. Right in the heart of the French countryside...tres jolie!

The first three books introduce the region and the characters and it does help if you’ve read the series in order – not that it spoils the plot but as with anything the more backstory you know leading up to the events here make for a more thrilling and amusing read.

We rejoin the residents of Fogas as they try to fight the bigger boys in order to keep the village independent – there are plans to effectively wipe the lovely community from the map – to merge them with Sarrat, their arch-rivals from across the river – and farmer Christian Dupuy is not a happy man.

Well he is at times as he is harbouring romantic thoughts for someone but is scared by his feelings and is unlikely anytime soon to declare his feelings. But with the threat of the community vanishing and the matter of one of the hottest summers in recent times, the temperature is as high as the tension and emotional ups and down of the Fogas villagers.

You definately need to read this book to understand what it means to live in a French village – the levels of bureaucracy and the ways of doing things is hard to explain at times but Julia obviously has lived the life of the characters – ie in a french village and auberge – hopefully not the more way out and extreme Fogas habits (hehe). This is one funny and amusing look at French village life. I SO want to live here! Julia adopt me!

I've read the first three and have eagerly awaited the fourth. I wasn't disappointed. It was like going back to a place you know and seeing all your old friends again. Always with a new twist, dramas, on/off relationships and something in-bedded in the story ready for the next book. Wonderful!!
