Product Description

Review

Once again, Bobby Knutt tells it just as it was and is in a story that goes behind the scenes and demonstrates with earthy good humour that the world of showbiz is definitely more spit and sawdust than feathers and sequins. Bobby is a born storyteller and with a cast of unforgettable characters - everybody from Marti Caine to Frankie Howerd - he really can't go wrong! --John Highfield

About the Author

Bobby Knutt has been performing nationally and internationally for over four decades and he is still at work. In 2010 he returned to the TV screens as the voice of the gaffer for Tetley Tea.

I first saw Bobby Knutt at Swillington Miners Welfare Club some time around the mid 1970's and, at a time when the northern club circuit was awash with good quality acts, he stood out. Some 20 years later I saw him again when he was guest speaker at a British Coal management dinner and, once more, he didn't disappoint. The next sighting was on board P&O's Victoria, which he covers in the book with great dignity. Sadly the audiences didn't want to listen: he entertained me both verbally and vocally with the jokes and a moving folk song about the ANZAC troops, but when most of the audience have turned up for a natter or a kip any act is beaten before he starts. Moving on a couple of years and our paths crossed again on a different ship with a different audience, and he held them in the palm of his hand, he absolutely shone.

This book is a down-to-earth, honest diary of a full and fascinating life. It brought out every emotion for me: tears of sadness when Bobby covers the deaths of those close to him, including people who have touched all our lives, the likes of Marti Caine and Brian Glover, and tears of laughter in all sorts of places, in particular the tale of the young lad at the Panto aand the cruise passenger the unfortunate Stuart Gillies found himself stuck with.

With age comes a different outlook: Bobby would probably admit that the first part of his life was spent chasing a livelihood and chasing women, and on that score he was obviously a fast runner: latterly, particularly after punching above his weight and landing the lovely Donna, he has settled down and shows in this book the feelings for friends and loved ones which he didn't show so much in the first book.

This instalment of Bobby's life brings us up to 2010.
I love him for his humour, and his honesty.
I love that he's found the love of his life and is faithful to her after all his adventures. I loved book one, but I think I prefer this one. Actually, I would have liked his autobiography to be all in one big instalment. But that's because I'm greedy.
He will help people out if they need it. He will kick them up the a**e if they need it. He will stick up for himself if necessary even if it sometimes means he loses out.
Many of the people in this instalment are familiar to me because I work in the same environment and I was born and grew up not far from Sheffield, so I enjoyed reading all of that. Especially the section on working the Cruise ship circuit.
I found myself wanting to slap one of the Cruise ship staff who sent in bad reports which resulted in Bobby not being employed again. These chapters really are eye openers for those of us who have long suspected that working on the Cruises is not the paradise some would have you believe.
Knutty really has done it all. I just wish he'd made enough money to retire comfortably because his talent deserved a better pay off. BUT he has lived the good life for a long time. I just find it sad that he's had to downsize his home and sell his beloved guitars to help make ends meet.
So his story, as the title says is a mix of comedy and tragedy.
But, love is what really matters. And he has clearly found true love with Donna, and he is well loved by many people.
And unlike many of his beloved friends, he's still here to tell the tale and make us laugh.

Thanks Knutty.

Now I think we must start a campaign for ITV to bring back Albert Dingle!

FIRST OF ALL I REALLY ENJOYED THE BOOK COVER TO COVER USING THE OLD CLICHE, I COULDNT PUT IT DOWN. THE FALKLANDS STORY WAS ESPECIALLY INTERESTING AS IT PLAYED SUCH AN IMPORTANT CHAPTER IN THE LIVES OF THE ISLANDERS. BOBBY AND HIS FELLOW ARTISTS IM SURE WILL HAVE LASTING MEMORIES OF THAT TRIP.
THE STORY OF COURSE RATTLES ON AT A GREAT PACE AND COVERS AN ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF AMUSING STORIES,FROM APPEARANCES IN CORRIE TO HEART BEAT AND OF COURSE THE OLD FAVOURITE ,PANTO. I WAS PARTICULARLY IMPRESSED WITH THE WRITERS HONESTY IN THAT HE RELATED TO ALL THE GOOD AND BAD IN HIS LIFE. STORMING THE AUDIENCE TO DYING A DEATH. HE CERTAINLY WRITES IT AS IT IS TO COIN A PHRASE.
