We first bought the book on France ten or more years ago when we were regularly taking holidays in France with the kids. We've subsequently bought editions for many different countries, the latest being this Germany book ahead of a touring holiday in Bavaria.
We have so many guides from this series because we find them all to be equally easy to use and navigate your way around. As you'd expect with Dorling Kindersley the layout is clear, the pictures colourful and eye-catching, the text easy to read and the illustrations - often cut-aways - very useful for understanding more about a building, palace or whatever.
Fully indexed with general information at the front, including a very useful brief history of the country, the book is split by geographical areas. At the back there are universally useful sections of hotels, restaurants, travel and even a quick translator to help in hotels and restaurants.
We've found and liked hotels, restaurants, museums - as well as thankfully avoided a few - with the simple, unemotional content of these guides.
On holiday we never leave the house/hotel without it so thankfully the glossy but flexible cover is pretty resilient to rain, sand and sticky fingers. A real friend when you're away.

I bought this book after seeing excellent reviews and I am not disappointed. The book starts off with an overview of German culture, politics and history and ends with appendices about travel, hotels and tips about holidays. In between the book is divided into chapters on each of the German regions (Landes). There are also chapters on the major cities. Each chapter is full of photos, maps, diagrams and information on the salient points of interest along with places to stay and eat.This book though, gives very little information about hiking and camping as it is more for the motorised tourist, so if you are planning a holiday to Germany, then this book is probably the best place to start.

This is an interesting and informative book which is sensibly laid out. Maps of the different areas are displayed clearly and each chapter provides places of interest to visit. These are accompanied by some historical background and relevant information such as opening times and travel details. The photographs enhance your impression of each area. At the back of the book is additional travel info, along with guides to eating out and places to stay. A brilliant book!
