For anyone interested in the film this book is an invaluable resource for delving further into the structure, complexities and mysteries of Kubrick's enigmatic drama. Reading the scenes on paper made me realise how sharp the dialogue is (particularly in the first argument between Bill and Alice) and thoughts of Pinter sprung to mind. What I also saw is how little of the information in the film is verbally conveyed. This became more evident as I read the source story and saw that many of the character details Schnitzler describes are only depicted in Eyes Wide Shut through visual means. Reading Traumnovelle also revealed some of the changes Kubrick made which are also very interesting and throw even more light onto some of the ideas in his movie.

PS: In reading the credits you find out something curious about the relationship between Mandy, Domino and the Mysterious Woman at the orgy.

Being a big Kubrick fan, I was a bit disappointed. The screenplay seems to be more of a transcript than an actual draft used during the production. The pictures from the film are black and white and seemed stage (a little bit of Kubrick trivia: every production still from his movies was from the film itself, i.e. the actual film frame, but not some of the pictures in this book). The novel "Dream Story" and the typed credits were worth the price of the book alone for a Kubrick fanatic like me, though.

This edition includes the complete screenplay by Kubrick and Fredric Raphael (of "Darling" fame) and the Schnitzler novella "Traumnovelle" that was the movie's basis.

Engrossing, titillating and ultimately haunting, it is a book to be savored and treasured for a long time to come. Includes 16 pages of photographs from the film.
