2.0 out of 5 stars Yet another Japanese re-make, it's time Hollywood started to think up its own ideas, 18 Oct 2008
The main problem with this film is that it has a very 'seen it all before' feel to it. The film has plenty of genuinely scary imagery and the strange apparitions Jessica Alba's character starts seeing with her new eyes provide some very haunting scenes.

But as Alba's character becomes more aware that there's something very sinister about her eyes and decides to try and unearth some answers, the film then becomes very plodding and a little tedious. Each new revelation is accompanied by an obligatory scare but there's no shocks or surprises here, it's all very production-line, with the film makers making sure they tick all the right boxes for a horror.

The trouble now is that it's getting very difficult to tell films like The Eye, The Ring, The Grudge, etc. apart from one another. This J-Horror derived formula is becoming very tired and a bit stale and it really is time for Hollywood to show a bit of courage and bring something new to the horror genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable horror - just the right mix!, 21 Oct 2008
To date, the scariest film I've seen is THE RING - it's chilling and compelling and there's something about the horror of it that stays with you for days after you've seen it. I don't tend to like watching things that are tooo scary, especially supernatural horror and when I saw the cinema trailer for THE EYE I was quite torn as it looked like a brilliant film but something that would be a nightmare for me to watch!! I'm a big Jessica Alba fan though and really wanted to see her in this role so I plucked up the courage and got it on DVD!

This film is very watchable - it's got everything: thrills, suspense, suprise, a good storyline and it IS scary. However, I can also see why hardcore horror fans would find this a bit tame. Don't let the negative reviews put you off though - I admit the film doesn't have the kind of sophistication that something like THE RING has and I did finish watching the film feeling like I wanted something a little more especially in the first half of the film which could do with having a few more spine-tingling chills & thrills. Despite this though, it is a thoroughly enjoyable film - the blind girl getting someone elses eyes (and memories) is a cool concept and the film is nicely wrapped up at the end too - a welcomed change for these Japansese horrors!

Speaking of Japanese horrors, after seeing this, I went back to watch the original and I have to say I much rather preferred the remake - it definitely made more of an impression on me as it has much better execution and Jessica Alba plays her character convincingly well. It's pretty loyal to the original but the journey is more chillingly entertaining.

Overall, this is very worthy of it's 4 stars - hardcore horror fans may be a little disappointed but I think you will love this if (like me) you tend to enjoy your thriller/horror films and like to be scared but not so scared that you can't be left in the dark by yourself!! :)

1.0 out of 5 stars Same old stuff, 28 Sep 2008

American attempts to emulate classic Japanese horrors is really starting to bore viewers like anything. As usual, the movie is spoilt with annoying gimmicks associated with Hollywood. It comes a time where Hollywood needs to generate their own ideas and not try not compete with Japan unfairly by replicating their movies to a Western audience. Japan are masters at producing scary horrors and Hollywood should head a new direction on what it can offer to viewers. The industry has a proud history of producing some of finest movie to embrace cinematic viewing, but try to be original and innovative in ideas, which is really lacking at present when it comes to horror movies as The Eyes clearly proves

The setting of the movie is really typical of majority horror movies I have watched in recent times. It is not much of a surprise to viewers. The Eyes is about a young women Sydney (Jessica Alba) who is blind since childhood and through the medical revolution of eye surgery has her sight restored. Her vision presents disturbing images which are quite scary that I have to admit, but as viewers we are not seeing anything new and that really spoils it for viewers. It just the same old stuff we have seen in recent in horror movies. Jessica Alba is admittedly beautiful, but she struggles and feels uncomfortable of portraying the role as Sydney, a young and disturbed girl. A lack of real emotion is displayed in the character. The acting fails to reflect the industry standard required, as it far too wooden, not powerful enough and fails to convince viewers.

The Eyes offers absolute boredom to viewers, as the horror experience is lacking any depth and originality, which Hollywood is struggling a great deal on. Maybe before releasing the next horror movie, try to eliminate the idea of another Japanese classic. It does not going to work and excite viewers any longer.
