5.0 out of 5 stars the EMDR bible, 18 Oct 2008
This book is a 'must' for any EMDR practitioner as it provides the theory behind EMDR and covers the protocol, step-by-step, in great detail. However, it is very technical and for anyone wanting a basic understanding of EMDR I would recommend Shapiro & Forrest's, 'EMDR, The Breakthrough Eye Movement Therapy for Overcoming Anxiety, Stress and Trauma, which demonstrates its use through a series of case studies.

5.0 out of 5 stars EMDR, 6 April 2010

Physically, the book is not trivial and it's certainly not trivial in its subject matter. In the first part of the book, Francine details her observations that led her to set up the research experiments. Initially I found her style of language very difficult to interpret, even though I'm a psychotherapist and none of the concepts were new to me.

After about the first hundred pages, the style becomes much easier and more prescriptive in how the technique works and discusses the contraindications and protocols that must be observed. The system is flexible enough to be used for a wide range of treatments.Throughout, I was touched by Francine's evident level of compassion in dealing with people who were suffering.

It is more a book for the expert rather than a lay person's guide. I would reccomend the book to anyone working in the field of trauma such as counsellor, psychotherapist or psychologist. Further information regarding hands on specialist training (in the UK) can be found easily on the Internet.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction, 4 July 2011
I have been considering studying EMDR for some time, having worked in Psychotherapy for several years. This book is refreshingly "human" in style, avoiding the overly complicated jargon and and unnecessary complexity of other books I have read.

A relatively easy to read book, it clearly outlines the principles and also the protocols and procedures of eye movement desensitisation and reprogramming therapy. I am reading it in preparation for my formal training which begins in October this year - can't wait!
