Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Technologically, this is an amazing device. To think that a wifi transmitter can fit into a tiny space the size of a stamp, plus 8gig of storage, is astonishing.

It works well. Firstly you plug it into your PC with the thoughtfully supplied card reader (though you can of course use any reader), and the software is installed directly off the card. Once you've installed the software you set up which wireless networks you'd like to use, where you'd like your pictures to go as they're uploaded, and whether or not you'd like 'endless memory'.

Wireless networking can either be through a router, or you can set up an 'ad hoc' network in which the eyefi card connects directly (wirelessly) to your PC. This is great if you're out and about as it means you don't actually need an internet connection if you have a laptop handy, or if your connection to the internet is wired you use the laptop as a sort-of modem.

Where you'd like your pictures to go gives you a few options. You can choose where your pictures are stored on your computer, or where on the internet you'd like them to be uploaded to. Flickr and Facebook are both supported, as you'd expect, and you can set up other locations easily.

Endless Memory simply means that as you shoot, your shots are uploaded, and then deleted from the card. Eyefi assure you that nothing will be deleted without a confirmed upload, but still I'm not sure how much I'd trust this! But then, with 8gig of storage, it's pretty close to 'endless' as it is and you'd have to go some to fill it up.

Geotagging is supported, although as this works off interogating nearby wifi hotspots its not a lot of use unless you live in a reasonably large population centre. Here in the sticks where I live, it doesn't work.

*Edited in 10/8/12 (about 8 months after I bought it)*

I decided to change my review and rate this item 1 star down. It simply doesnt fit for its purpose. It lately started to work erratically, losing its purpose completely. Like someone else said in another review, it definitely isnt a "pro" item, it is completely unreliable. After 8 months of daily use I didnt see any improvement, no significant update. Im turning its wi-fi functionality off and just using it as a very expensive and regular card...

Dec 15 2011:
I've been using it for 3 days now and have mixed feelings about it. I consider myself a bit geeky, but still this card took me a good amount of time and reading in forums and their website to understand how to use it. So a few things to consider.

Cons:

- Geotag depends on local wi-fi, not on GPS. So So don't expect the most precise location thou most of the time it is precise. No wi-fi around you, no geotag. You DONT need to connect to any wy-fi, just to detect wi-fi connections around to pinpoint location. Going to Amazonia? No geotag (probably)
- Geotag is added ONLY after WI-FI TRANSFER. Eye-fi does not geotag your pictures when you shoot them. Meaning? Wanna speed up uploading to your computer connecting the card directly to your laptop and drag and drop? Well, you won't get geotag! So if you shoot raw you will have to wait a bit longer to upload your pics! Eye-fi needs to upload your pics to your computer wirelessly, then it sends information to their servers which will send back geotag to be added to your pics. Its all automatic, but it is good to know how it works and they don't tell you this anywhere.
- No control over what is transferred. At all! Turn on your cam, the upload starts.

Amazing hardware, terrible firmware, software and design overall. Only works with proprietary apps, all of which on the three platforms I tried are massively flawed, unfinished and unstable. The card itself demands near-constant internet access even for local offline use, and this is "by design", as I was informed by their technical support, so that the card can constantly phone home to tell them where the card is geographically, "in case it gets stolen". No way to disable this and it isn't documented anywhere.

There are notable incompatibilities with the Canon EOS 450d and 550d which aren't listed on their website, and if you use or have ever used custom firmware on the 550d (e.g. Magic Lantern) then this card will crash your camera.

I was also informed that despite the 'Pro' moniker this card "is not designed for professional use" or for large DSLR files in general (even when advertising RAW support) and I should send it back. To get even this response required logging a lengthy ticket, which was closed with only the comment to call them on an 0845 number as they would not help via email. Not a single issue was addressed or resolved even with the 40 minute call or in the week or so since it. Highly unprofessional.

Being a hollow-eyed gadget addict and having gone through the catalogue of disappoints with all sorts of snake-oil product promises, I bought an Eye-fi card fearing the worst. I'd expected to get it running after the usual software struggle and then find it did a poor to fair job at best. In reality, I slapped it in the PC, pressed 'go' and within a few minutes had uploaded pictures to both Facebook, Flickr and the preferred photo-manipulation programme without any snags or hassle. A few tweaks and the iphone app was also synched with the PC and I was stuck wondering what to do with the rest of the morning. I've subsequently got into the back pages of the software & have started tweaking it to do loads of other neat stuff - with different PCs, the laptop and multiple wifi services....all to great effect and the thing has genuinely made the whole transfer process so ridiculously easy. Money VERY well spent.
