Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Technologically, this is an amazing device. To think that a wifi transmitter can fit into a tiny space the size of a stamp, plus 8gig of storage, is astonishing.

It works well. Firstly you plug it into your PC with the thoughtfully supplied card reader (though you can of course use any reader), and the software is installed directly off the card. Once you've installed the software you set up which wireless networks you'd like to use, where you'd like your pictures to go as they're uploaded, and whether or not you'd like 'endless memory'.

Wireless networking can either be through a router, or you can set up an 'ad hoc' network in which the eyefi card connects directly (wirelessly) to your PC. This is great if you're out and about as it means you don't actually need an internet connection if you have a laptop handy, or if your connection to the internet is wired you use the laptop as a sort-of modem.

Where you'd like your pictures to go gives you a few options. You can choose where your pictures are stored on your computer, or where on the internet you'd like them to be uploaded to. Flickr and Facebook are both supported, as you'd expect, and you can set up other locations easily.

Endless Memory simply means that as you shoot, your shots are uploaded, and then deleted from the card. Eyefi assure you that nothing will be deleted without a confirmed upload, but still I'm not sure how much I'd trust this! But then, with 8gig of storage, it's pretty close to 'endless' as it is and you'd have to go some to fill it up.

Geotagging is supported, although as this works off interogating nearby wifi hotspots its not a lot of use unless you live in a reasonably large population centre. Here in the sticks where I live, it doesn't work.

So, what's it actually for though? Well, this is where you should really consider whether or not you actually need one of these things. It's great for things like stop-motion films, or time-lapse photography as you can actually see what you're getting as you're working - you don't need to wait until the shoot is finished before you find out you've messed up.
I've been using it with a GoPro Surf HERO - Digital camera - compact - 5.0 Mpix - supported memory: MMC, SD, SDHC, in a water housing, and it's great for that as you don't need to open the wet case to get your shots out. For this alone it's worth buying for me, but considering you get 8gig of storage on this card - how soon are you going to fill that up that you need to wirelessly download it?

So why four stars rather than five? Well, as good as this is it's rather poorly supported by the manufacturer. On opening the packaging I was pleased to see a fairly thick printed manual in a handy camera-bag sized booklet. Brilliant! Less so when I leafed through to discover that its just a load of legalese about it not being eyefi's fault if anything explodes. (or words to that effect).
There is no manual, not even on PDF on the card - all the help is on the eyefi website, which is poorly laid out and difficult to navigate - somethings are on a FAQ page, other items require a PDF download, other hints are scattered about the site. It's not good, and it makes the card unnecessarily difficult to get a 'feel' for and slows you down from getting the best from it.

The software is clunky and a little unintuitive, with irritating error messages like 'take a breath' if you make a mistake. The options screen has no 'save changes' button, but you'll be told off for not saving your changes if you move off a screen. It all works, most of the time, and it's not difficult to use, but its not as smooth and simple as it could be. It also doesn't support RAW files, or at least Pentax ones (PEF) and doesn't display them. It's also very slow, and tends to lock up. When I'm trusting the software on the card to safely upload my shots without losing them this doesn't instill confidence.
Eyefi's own online storage cost extra on top of the price of the card, and although you do get basic functionality, the original RAW files are not stored. It's also difficult to find your own site, as your shots upload to a site address which is full of odd symbols and nothing memorable. Hmm, not easy to tell Auntie Hilda where to find that. Also the link to find the site from the eyefi software are so hidden, you have to go through the eyefi website help each time to get there. Awful to find, awful to use, and to be honest not worth the five or six quid a month they charge.

So, technologically amazing, and works well but with drawbacks. Consider, for the price of this card you could buy 4 or 5 8gig memory cards, so do you really need this?

4.0 out of 5 stars Really useful following App update! 21 April 2011
I have used this card (8Gb Pro X2) for a few months now with a Nikon D7000 and find it adds great functionality to a great camera. I have a SanDisk Extreme 16Gb in slot one for RAW and this card in slot two for JPGs, each time I take a shot I have a JPG sent automatically by wi-fi to my Mac sitting in my office and/or to my MobileMe account, if I'm not in a connectable wi-fi hotspot they are sent when I enter one.

Yesterday (20/4/11) the free 'Eye-Fi' app on my iPhone was updated to include a mode whereby, without the previous need for a mobile wi-fi router, shots taken can be sent directly to an iPhone (or indeed iPad) instead; this means that on a shoot I can show the client the images as they are taken with ease or simply be able to send images to a backup device for later downloading. Where the shots are directed is dictated either by the app or by desktop so I can swop back to desktop if appropriate, easily. ***I have had a frustrating day and lowered my rating to 4stars - reason 'flakey software' - having failed to download a single shot all day, I have discovered you need to go to iPhone settings/networks select the network created by the card and apply the password from the desktop app to 'Join' - I hope this solves it. In short, if you are not techy, get help.

Transfer rates are reasonable and as others have mentioned, the 'geotagging' is good but not great. This uses a database of wi-fi networks to determine which one you are in range of, so it's not GPS or assisted GPS rather a spin-off use of the fact that someone has constructed a database of a few million wi-fi networks and their numerical addresses, the card captures the 'number' and this is then translated to a location on download - in the country, forget it, in most towns it's pretty good.

Finally, the software is functional and requires a degree of thought in use, for example, grasping the consequences of your choices - 'do I want every photo to be sent to Flickr?' etc.

Overall I rate this as good value for the money, to others it may be a solution to a problem they don't have!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not suitable for professional use 27 Feb 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
Amazing hardware, terrible firmware, software and design overall. Only works with proprietary apps, all of which on the three platforms I tried are massively flawed, unfinished and unstable. The card itself demands near-constant internet access even for local offline use, and this is "by design", as I was informed by their technical support, so that the card can constantly phone home to tell them where the card is geographically, "in case it gets stolen". No way to disable this and it isn't documented anywhere.

There are notable incompatibilities with the Canon EOS 450d and 550d which aren't listed on their website, and if you use or have ever used custom firmware on the 550d (e.g. Magic Lantern) then this card will crash your camera.

I was also informed that despite the 'Pro' moniker this card "is not designed for professional use" or for large DSLR files in general (even when advertising RAW support) and I should send it back. To get even this response required logging a lengthy ticket, which was closed with only the comment to call them on an 0845 number as they would not help via email. Not a single issue was addressed or resolved even with the 40 minute call or in the week or so since it. Highly unprofessional.
