Product Description

Review

This book is essential reading for researchers of lighting and visual perception ... I strongly expect they will find it an interesting read, and may even find inspiration for new ideas. (Lighting, Research and Technology )

It could hardly be better done. The author has managed to explain very complex matters with exemplary lucidity.. (The Economist )

It is quite the best introduction to the psychology and physiology of perception that I have ever come across. For anyone interested in this fascinating topic, be they intelligent layman, university student, or smart sixth-former, I can hardly recommend it too strongly. (Discovery )

Shows exactly why the eye is not like a camera, and has made me much more aware of the oddities of vision. As an architectural lighting designer, I use this book as a bible and read it more often than any of the books about lighting design. My old copy wore out, which is why I'm ordering a new one!

All photographers should read this. It explains how the eye is not a simple camera but an extention of the brain. It explains how we perceive images, which is vital information for anyone seeking to produce images.

This is a good reference of visual function for those interested in going one step further than the very basics of vision. There are a few inaccuracies, only of concern to those specialised in the field but this is certainly not a textbook on physiology or anatomy and does not claim to be; besides, scientific developments since the last reprint of the fifth edition in 2005 have displaced this document into the realm of historical contributions. As an ophthalmologist and digital designer, I can appreciate the fascinating psychological, philosophical and historical approach, so important for understanding the potential of visual media productions. I am sure it will feed creative minds and "open the eyes" of many, working in visual arts.
