3.0 out of 5 stars An intriguing but disastrously miscast near-miss 19 Feb 2009
By Trevor Willsmer HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Eye of the Beholder is the kind of film that provokes an odd reaction - it's not actually the total failure most critics claim, but it doesn't work. As with the previous French version of Marc Behm's thriller, Mortelle Randonnee (itself much loved by critics but far more problematic), the premise is good - an emotionally damaged surveillance expert covers up the serial murders of an even more damaged young woman he convinces himself is his long-dead daughter. Unfortunately Ewan McGregor's casting in the male lead pretty much kills the film at birth because he's just too young - the part needs to be a middle-aged man so that the confusion between the girl and his daughter is more understandable. As the object of his obsession Ashley Judd doesn't do the film any favours either, neither looking nor feeling right. But there's an undeniable vision to the film, even if it proves that striking visual composition and the odd ingenious bit of filmmaking is no compensation for human feeling and genuine empathy and involvement. Maybe it'll be a case of third time lucky for the next person to adapt the novel....

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully surreal film 24 Sep 2012
Format:DVD
I've read many negative reviews for 'Eye Of The Beholder', but I personally thought it to be something refreshingly different. I certainly haven't seen many movies like this.

An exciting and enjoyable thriller. 'Eye Of The Beholder' casts Ewan McGregor as 'the eye', an isolated and rather odd British Intelligence officer who is signed to the case of the beautiful and mysterious Joanna Eris (played by Ashley Judd). Although accused only of blackmailing a British official senior, she is guilty of far more than that. It's up-to 'the eye' to shadow her and discover more about the woman who is causally committing murder after murder. Both Ewan McGregor and Ashley Judd both give good performances in what are two interesting characters.

I can see why some people might not like this film, it is odd one (admittedly a bit silly at times) but a very original work. On the other hand, I did enjoy 'Eye Of The Beholder' and found it an intelligent film with an intriguing plot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still weird as heck 5 Mar 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
A rare kind of film: original (to me, anyway - I hadn't seen much or anything like it before), unexpected, unconventional and unapologetic. Nothing is clear-cut and you're never quite sure who is 'good' or 'bad'.

Great performances and drags you into its world fast, keeping you there.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent
I am crazy about Ashley Judd, a women who is beautiful even when she cries or sad! A rare quality.

The film is about obsession, deception and really enjoyable to watch.
