3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By M. Joyce TOP 500 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 19 Jun. 2010
Format: Audio CD
James O'Donnell and the Choir of Westminster Cathedral have made some marvellous recordings for Hyperion and this collection of Sacred Polyphony is no exception. It embraces Italian giants such as Palestrina, Gabrieli and Monteverdi as well as English composers including Byrd, Tallis and Parsons. There are some wonderful discoveries to be made here and, churlish though it may seem, I rather regretted the inevitable presence of Allegri's "Miserere," whose inclusion on discs of this sort appears to be compulsory. The works are impeccably performed and recorded, while the scholarly sleeve-notes by Jeremy Summerly are excellent.

Format: Audio CD
From Allegri's Miserere to William Byrd's Civitas Sancti Tui, this is cathedral choir singing at its best. The soprano voice rings out strongly in the Allegri, and throughout the voices are projected cleanly, if occasionally too far forward - blame the engineers not the voices.
At times the recording seems a little light in weight, perhaps compensating for a vibrant acoustic. Neveertheless there is a strong dynamic contrast in the choir's spirited singing.
A fine example of the English Choral tradition.
