I was never really aware of the Fall until a friend gave me Extricate for my birthday back in 1990. That was the start of it all. I explored their back catalogue, loving The Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall and This Nation's Saving Grace especially, but also getting into the earlier stuff which I'd dismissed at the time. I was hooked, and the albums that followed confirmed what a genius Mark E Smith is. Shiftwork, the Light User Syndrome - unbelievably good. And he's still delivering the goods. Imperial Wax Solvent is streets ahead of most of the albums released last year.

However, Extricate is still my favourite. It's so accessible. Hard-edged, but with a pop sensibility, from the discordant Sing! Harpy to the sad almost spoken ballad, Bill is Dead; from the jittery soulfulness of Telephone Thing to the country twang of And Therein. Every track is different. Every track is superb. The rhythms are driving and precise. The tunes are memorable. And the lyrics... The descriptions of H-H-H-Hilary still make me laugh. The Arms Control Poseur with his Next cardigan. The 'beached whale in warpaint' of British People in Hot Weather. It is all so minimally yet sharply observed.

The number of Fall albums that exist are daunting for the newcomer, but I can't recommend Extricate as an entry point highly enough. It is staggeringly good. But beware, you could end up with more than 40 albums, as I have done.

Younger people than me would love the Fall if they gave them a chance. My own kids love them, but won't go to concerts because they're full of fans my age! Although 50,000 fans certainly can't be wrong, perhaps we owe it to Mark E Smith to avoid these gigs, to give him a fighting chance of gaining a new, younger audience. Thing is, I'm never going to do that, because live, they are arguably even better than on cd.

I adore this album ,my favourite out of all the fall cds I own . I can't explain it. Ask any fall fan why they love them and amongst a torrent of acolades nothing of substance will surface , for me that is the fall. Ever new, ever in flux.

Buy it ,don't be a dummy.

This Fall album is fantastic for all the reasons given in the above reviews, but for me the clincher is the utterly mesmerising and beautiful 'Bill is Dead'. Listen to this and you will hear Mark E Smith sounding wistful and romantic - something many thought they would never do so!

Kerry the reissue follows the original Lp tracklisting on cd 1. Those extra 4 tracks that were added to cd and cassette versions are all on the 2nd cd.

Extricate was an amazing album but this updated version is missing four tracks from the original version which is a real problem for me.
