Extremely Kissable!, 8 April 2009
Extreme Kissing is every bit as sweet, funny and clever as the Sliding-Doors-esque Split By A Kiss.
Bethany and Carlota are best friends, but that doesn't mean they don't have secrets from each other. Bets is terrified she might be pregnant, while Carlota's not quite the girl everyone assumes - and their day of `Extreme Travelling' (every move dictated by the random pages of a magazine) isn't the escape from their troubles they'd hoped for. The story whizzes along, alternately narrated by `good girl' Bets and `wild child' Lots, and even if you have a sneaking suspicion you've worked out Carlota's secret, there might just be another one underneath...
This is Plaja's real gift: there's a sense of absolute authenticity about her characters, whose lives (family, school, friends, boyfriends, past relationships, future hopes and fears) are so convincingly fleshed out that you really do end up caring about their multiple worries - and their triumphs too. The whole thing feels effortlessly witty too: Carlota's `Reverse Goth' fashion crusade, her tendency to knit under stress, the numerous moments where the girls completely misunderstand one another.
Perfect for Louise Rennison fans who like a little angst in with their teenage escapades!

Bethany and Carlota have been best friends ever since Carlota moved from Brussels. Ever since then, Carlota has been pining after her ex, Yves, though she doesn't let on, having everyone believe that she's only interested in Kisses Etcetera with a bunch of random guys.
With her boy snaring techniques, Bethany soon finds herself with her own boyfriend, Declan, but what happens when she has a pregnancy scare? Before knowing Bethany's secret, Carlota comes up with a day out doing extreme challenges using magazines to reveal another secret to her best friend.
EXTREME KISSING was a very interesting novel. Throughout the book, the two girls are hiding things from each other but would rather run around London doing crazy tasks instead of owning up to the truth. However, in the end, Carlota's plan to make Bethany chill out does work, but Carlota begins to understand all the worries that Bethany used to carry around.
I was quite shocked by the end of this story. Things aren't quite what they seem in EXTREME KISSING, and it just added to this story's greatness. If everything was obvious with a happily-ever-after ending, it wouldn't have been as good, but instead, you get romance, lies, mystery, breaking out and living life, and the true meaning of friendship.

Extreme Fun!, 2 April 2009
Extreme Kissing is UK author Luisa Plaja's second book for teen girls. It's original and true to life, and is sure to appeal to a wide range of readers.
Bethany (Bets) and Carlota (Lots) are best friends, and together they share everything. Well... almost everything. When Carlota discovers a secret that could ruin Bethany's relationship with her boyfriend Declan, the pair head to London for some Extreme Travel.
Carlota and Bethany are realistic characters and, similar to Jo in Luisa's debut novel Split by a Kiss, they have numerous worries and problems that all teenage girls experience. I particularly like the fact that they both have different personalities (Carlota is outgoing, Bethany is shy), yet still have a strong friendship. It just shows that opposites do attract!
The male characters, Yves and Zac, are really quite swoonworthy. Especially Zac. They're exactly as you'd imagine teenage boys to be, and successfully provide the romantic element of the book.
The idea of Extreme Travel isn't something I've come across before, but it sounds fun! Especially using the pages of a magazine to create challenges (Eg. if you open it to a fashion page, you go clothes shopping). I can see hundreds of teen girls all over the UK adopting this as a new hobby, and I'm quite tempted myself!
Extreme Kissing is about lots of things: friendship, family, trust, love and choices. It's also about living life, and taking risks every now and then. I would highly recommend this to readers of Louise Rennison and Liz Rettig, and YA fiction fans in general, as I'm sure you will thoroughly enjoy this teen tale of extremes.
