Format:Audio CD
This is my favourite of BOC's three live albums purely because it manages more than a nod to the past glories of early classics like 'Dominance and Submission', 'Hot Rails to Hell' and particularly 'Red and Black' while throwing in mid-period gems like 'Reaper', 'Godzilla', & 'E.T.I.' and a smattering off the wonderful 'Fire of Unknown Origin' album in 'Burnin For You', the incredible nightmare of 'Joan Crawford' and a truly jaw-dropping 'Veteran of the Psychic Wars'. Even the mostly poor 'Mirrors' album gets a look-in with a fantastic take of 'Dr. Music' and of course the frenzied space-metal of sci-fi classic 'Black Blade'from 'Cultosaurus Erectus'. In short it plays like a 'greatest hits' album and as a lot of these tracks were performed as the encores across a multitude of different shows from back-to-back tours in 80/81 the energy is simply incredible. As always the Cult can rock with the best of them and although founding member and drummer Albert Bouchard plays on only two tracks from the 1980 'Cultosaurus' tour (he quit somewhat acrimoniously afterwards) his drum seat is more than ably covered by the powerhouse skin bashing of Rick Downey. The drums are very much to the fore in the mix which does somewhat lessen the impact of the fantastic bass work of Joe Bouchard but with Allan Lanier's always creative keys and the solid riffing of Eric Bloom the Cult provide a rock solid platform for star man Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser to cut loose with the most impressive lead guitar of his already illustrious career. Buck simply rips everything up with the kind of pyrotechnic fretwork that rivals anything by more celebrated axe-heroes like Blackmore, Schenker and Steve Vai. His solos on 'E.T.I.', 'Reaper' and 'Veteran' are staggering white hot shards of melodic improvisation that any fan of Metallica's Kirk Hammett will be blown away by!

With a rollicking homage to their early influence of The Doors on the freeform jamming 'Roadhouse Blues', complete with guesting Doors axeman Robbie Krieger, The Cult cover all bases superbly and it's truly amazing to hear driving heavy rock/metal played with such dexterity and variety. If the recent remasters of the Cult's back catalogue are anything to go by (check out Some Enchanted Evening's generous bonus tracks) then this set is due for an update hopefully to include other classics like

'Cultosaurus's 'Divine Wind', 'Monsters', 'Marshall Plan' and 'Vengeance' and 'Heavy Metal' from 'Fire' or even 'I Am The Storm' from 'Mirrors'. We can but hope that BOC can pull some of these from the vaults for a remaster, but until then this staggering live album which easily sits alongside the greats like 'Strangers In The Night', 'Live & Dangerous',

'Unleashed In The East', 'Made in Japan', 'If You Want Blood', 'Tokyo Tapes' and the Cult's own 'On Your Feet or On Your Knees', and stands as a testiment to the awesome power and majesty of BOC's hugely impressive catalogue. Buy this album because live classic rock just doesn't get any better than this!

Wrapped up in a superb album sleeve, back in the day great things were expected of this release,it delivered, just!.Had a little more care been taken then this could have been a contender for best B.O.C. live album.

Plus points stunning versions of 'Dr Music','Cities On Flame...' and 'Hot Rails To Hell',a fantastic cover version of 'Roadhouse Blues',back in the vinyl days side 4 comprising 'Veteran of the Phychic Wars','E.T.I.' &'...Reaper' was as good as the Cult had ever been on a live disc, and it remains the highlight of this release, the guitar solo on 'Veteran...' is simply superb while i believe the version of 'Dont Fear...' is the best available.

As for the rest well a couple of weak versions of 'Dominance and Submission' and 'Red and Black' let the side down while a truly horrendous decision to have a drum solo in the middle of 'Godzilla' leaves me speechless. That leaves 3 tracks,'Joan Crawford' & 'Burnin For You' from Fire Of Unknown Origin, the former i cant stand, the latter a decent pop moment from the Cult and lastly 'Black Blade' ,certainly its a lot heavier live but its still contrived nonsense.

As for the sound quality at times the drums threaten to over shadow everything to the detriment of Joe Bouchards bass, this disc is definitely due a digital remaster, possibly could release as a deluxe edition? Certainly there are other live tracks in the can which could be used such as 'Mirrors','Great Sun Jester' & 'The Vigil' from the early 80's plus others , pretty much all of Cultasorus Erectus was played live at some point in the 80's,while 'Fire of Unknown Origin' and 'Heavy Metal' were aired in '81.Although im not a huge fan of either of those two early 80's discs it would be interesting to see how the songs fared in the live setting.

When BOC get any airtime on the radio it is only for one track,Don't fear the Reaper.A huge shame, for the discerning rock listener. This album takes you back to the better days of rock when substance certainly came before style.BOC were doing it way before the likes of Bon Jovi. This album ranks amongst the best live concert albums produced in the last thirty years. If you have only heard The Reaper then buy this CD if you want an overview of BOC's potential. The cd takes you on a fantastic journey through hard rock 'Dominance and submission',blues 'Roadhouseblues, and easy listening 'Burning for you'before leaving you lusting for more after the final 3 tracks. If you are lucky to see them in concert or want a concert experience then this is it.
