4.0 out of 5 stars Something a little different, 20 Oct 2005
This review is from: Extraordinary Ways (Audio CD)
Comments made about this album have generally been that it is a more well-rounded production than Conjure One's debut. And it's certainly true that there is a noticeably uniform sound to 'Extraordinary Ways'. Unlike the latter's Eastern-influenced sound, this album makes far more use of piano and guitar, resulting in a quieter, less intense sound. Likewise, the vocals are more considered and less saccharine; 'Endless dream' and 'Face the Music' sung by Jane are particularly strong, but without being overwrought.

Yet for me, this is often a somewhat melancholic sound which weighs upon you after some listening. In the case of the soaring instrumental tracks such as 'Pilgrimage', 'Dying light', and 'Into the Escape' this is a sign of the old Delerium influence coming through in Fulber, but it isn't strong enough in the vocal tracks to produce any real affinity with the Gothic darkness of Karma. Rather this a mellowed version of that sound, composed with a more reflective air. This isn't a negative criticism, but more that the eclectic sound of the first album struck me more as an interesting departure from Fulber's previous territory.

Having said that, there's still enough innovation in this album to make it intriguing. Indeed, in the case of Fulber's singing on 'I believe' the experiment may have gone a bit awry, but it's certainly unusual. Over all, this album is good balance of the qualities that Fulber is noted for: an excellent production, with a good mix of instrumental and vocal tracks; displayed with the usual superb artwork (albeit with a frightening image of Fulber returning to his caveman roots - check out the facial hair!); and exhibiting a sound that is just a little different.

4.0 out of 5 stars not chillout but full of warmth !, 7 April 2008
By Mr. P. G. Caldwell (cheshire, england) - See all my reviews

If you want to know what this album sounds like, well it not cold chillout.
Or dance music like delerium,it slightly more pop-oriented,but dont let that put you off.
It's full of quality music that draws you in and had me singing along the second time i played it.
with tracks endless dream ,face the music and extraordinary ways are my favourite but none of the tracks feel like fillers.
Think delerium's chimera or sleepthief's dawnseeker and you'll have a quality level to go by.
Of beautiful vocals(all sung in english),lush music and well writen lyrics.
That are more upbeat and warmer than chillout and like me you'll proberly play it a lot more than you expected to.
And if you like this check out.
Beneath the surface by BALLIGOMINGO .It has the same beauty as this of lush soundscape's and heavnly vocals.
Hope this helps

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS AND KARMA, 8 Sep 2005
By Giacomoni Andrea (Bagnacavallo, Ravenna Italy) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Extraordinary Ways (Audio CD)
I' ve been a fan of Fulber since the early times and still I am, even considering that his style is dramatically different now. Some dark beats and nearly operatic vocals (especially on tracks 3 and 8) are reminiscent of Karma but the depth and general tone are obviously more similar to those of the first Conjure one album. There are a few poppish tracks but with that "special touch" making them much more appealing. Considering also all delerium albums I must say that this one and Karma are my favorites. The reason is that all their other works seemed to me like a mere collection of (beautiful) songs, without a particular global meaning or cohesion, here the tracks are really made to work together, the lyrics and even the titles of the songs melt together to create a whole personal vision. Make sure you listen to it from start to finish, that' s really a different experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality Album.
For me the debut album was good but didn't quite gel. Tracks 2 and 3 were good but that was pretty much it. Extraordinary Ways on the other hand is brilliant. Read more
