Product Description

Review

Wow! If you thought chickens were scrawny brown things, pecking around in the dirt you won't believe your eyes when you see what's between the covers of this fun-sized, all-colour book on chickens. Chickens with bouffant hairdos, chickens with "fur", chickens that look as if they have been drawn by animators on acid. Long legs, short legs, legs with "trousers" on, legs with scales. Proud roosters strutting their stuff, miniature bantams with Napoleon complexes, coy araucanas hiding their heads. Photographer Stephen Green-Armytage manages to capture the nature and beauty of an enormous range of exotic, ornamental chickens from around the world. Accompanied by knowledgeable descriptions and origins of each bird, every photograph is guaranteed to bring a smile to the face if not an outright chuckle at the absurdity of some of their appearances and expressions. Chicken fancier or not, this is a must for lovers of animals, birds, the exotic and the bizarre. Fabulous. - Lucy Watson

Most books on chickens are technical, with perhaps a few, blurred snaps of birds taken by the author on a winter's day in the back yard. With "Extraordinary Chickens" - prepare for your eyes to stretch wide and your jaw to drop! This is VOGUE-style photography at its very best (how DID they manage to get these birds to pose so beautifully in the studio?). Every feather of every chicken is there in glorious, lush detail - from traditional farm-yard favourites to REALLY extraordinary exotics. There are photographic 'studies' too, with close-up montages of different feather patterns, of different foot and comb formations; whole 'clouds' of chicks of various breeds; and comical joint portraits of tiny, wiry types next to enormous, fluffy 'puff-ball' varieties.
This is an extraordinarily beautiful and amusing book, at a very good price, and one which even non-chicken fanciers would find hard to resist buying. Clucking good!

There are many disappointing books on Poultry and "The Fancy" However, this certainly is not one of them. It is original in it's photography, which really makes the book what it is, a MUST for Poultry enthusiasts and interesting for others too. Although this is not a particularly factual book, it more than makes up for it by it's enjoyable pictures.

I bought this for my father as he has kept chickens in various countries. He does not have any chickens at the moment, and he was delighted with the book, and all the different varieties of chickens, which he recognised. He loves it - beautiful photographs. Only wish the size of the book was a little bigger than a pocket book. Otherwise lovely gift for chicken keepers.

I have never owned any chickens but we have a nick name for my sisters boyfriend (half chicken). After seeing this book I knew it would make a cracking Christmas present. Before wrapping it I had a flip though, these flightless bird are really pretty I can see why people would want to keep them.

I gave this to my sister and brother-in-law for Christmas. They keep chickens and I thought this might amuse them. They were very pleased and didn't know there were so many different types of chickens.
