Format: Audio CD
Darden Smith's quietly masterful songs range from folk through country to rock and pop. On this album you get to hear all these styles from nearly all the albums. Common to all the songs is Darden's seductive voice, impeccable poetry, and sharp ear for melody and construction.
This is nice for Darden fans because all the versions are new, and one or two quite different, like "The Levy Song", sung down the phone, or the piano solo "Loving Arms". And there's a song unique to this album - also well up to scratch.
Good place to start if you're new to Darden Smith. I can't imagine you wouldn't want more after hearing this.

A BEST OF with a difference 4 Oct. 2002
By Androo - Published on
Format: Audio CD
With so many artists pushing out endless compilations of their old material, it's refreshing to see that Darden, original as ever, does it a little differently. So this one's worth buying even if you've got all of his other albums. And you get one new song.
Okay, some of these versions aren't THAT different from their original versions, but some are - Loving Arms on solo piano for instance... maybe worth the money for that alone.
In some ways I prefer the "Deep Fantastic Blue" material on here than on the album, just like I do when I hear him "live". And there is a bit of "live" recording here, with some judiciously edited applause in the background.
If you're unfamiliar with Darden's work, what's wrong with you? Start here so you can decide which one to buy next.

Great starter kit for new fans 11 Oct. 2000
By J. Tan - Published on
Format: Audio CD
This is a great introduction to a wonderful and extremely underexposed artist and his "greatest hits", re-recorded.
This idea of re-recording previously released songs is a bit weird. The album is a bit of a let down for hardcore fans because some of the tracks do not deviate enough from the originals, and yet they don't quite have a truly spontaneous feel to qualify as a "live" album.
Just the same, any Darden Smith album is better than none, and deserves no less than 5 stars.
A Fine Introduction to a Songwriter's Songwriter 26 Sept. 2007
By Donald L. Sugg - Published on
If you are unfamiliar with Darden Smith, this album provides a fine place to start. It includes wonderful re-recordings of some of his best material from prior albums. Smith's music crosses musical boundaries, encompassing folk, rock, and jazz influences. But always, the arrangements augment the music and showcase his well-crafted lyrics. Once you have listened to this album try his others, from his early work such as "Trouble No More" to his most recent commercial release, "Field of Crows". For true fans, check out the EP "Four Songs Live" or his first full live album, "Ojo" the latter of which is available only at or at one of his live preformances.
Feel-Good Tunes 26 Jun. 2013
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on
Format: Audio CD
I agree with the other glowing reviews of this album; this is a great collection of songs. Yes, some will be familiar to fans of Darden Smith, but these new versions are crisp and emotionally powerful. Darden Smith is one of more unheralded singer-songwriters in the US, and this album offers proof of how good he is. Song after song; nothing but quality. Tuneful gems that resonate. This would be a perfect introduction to his music for new fans or a pleasing listen for longtime fans. Extra Extra; Get it, Get it!

Buy this and listen........ 22 Aug. 2000
By J. Bilby - Published on
Format: Audio CD
This is a great CD start to finish, Darden's voice has a bit of folk and country and he's able to capture something in his voice that just draws you into his words, and the music on this cd lets the great songwriting shine. He has one of the best voices out there, great mix of styles and many stripped down but still haunting favorites from over the years. This guy should be getting airplay? I raitt him right up there with jacksone browne as a great singer/songwriter.
