3.0 out of 5 stars Uncontrolled mind games 1 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
Adam Neave would appear to be an intelligent, capable and caring professional, dedicated to his work as a counsellor. At least, that is what he wants people to think - and that is certainly what his colleagues and housemate think.

However, in the first chapter, we read about the trap that he is laying for a carefully selected victim - and then, step by step, we read about the entrapment, the rape, the killing and the disposal of the victim.

In turn, the local police set a trap for him - but it would appear that he is better at mind games than they are.

This is a graphic and very explicit crime novel - for the unwary, the graphic is very pornographic and there is lots of it. It's also a dark story, darker than I usually read. Expect to be left feeling just a little uncomfortable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spider's Web 28 July 2011
Format:Hardcover
Adam Neave is a charming, plausible psychotherapist who acts as a voluntary bereavement counsellor; except it's merely a front for his other activities; a date-rapist who moves on to serial killing with a nice sideline in fitting-up his annoying brother.

Rather like a spider, Neave sometimes leaves his web to search for victims but more often than not, they come to him. With bodies littering the area of Weston-Super-Mare, what are the police doing about it? Well, they infiltrate an undercover policewoman into Neave's world, but unfortunately, she begins to believe that he's really, really innocent and she really could do with a serious de-briefing at the end of each encounter. So it appears the police are flummoxed - or are they?

There's an diverse cast-list in this thriller which has more twists and turns than a serpent's tail, including one of Neave's cases who becomes as bonkers as conkers as the narrative progresses and many of the other characters suffering from lack of self-esteem - as well as bereavement. With steamy scenes on most of the 214 pages which leave absolutely nothing to the imagination, this latest oeuvre from Scotland's Mistress of Mayhem rushes on to a surprising conclusion.
