Product Description

SuperSpeed. Versatile. Tool-free. A premium dock for your 2.5" and 3.5" hard and solid state drives.

2.5" and 3.5" HDD/SSD compatible.
Due to its unique spring design, this docking station holds both your 2.5" and 3.5" HDD or SSD firmly in place. Moreover, the e-SATA interface accommodates all SATA standards (SATA, SATA II, SATA III).

SuperSpeed up to 5Gbps.
Equipped with both USB 3.0 and e-SATA ports, this docking station delivers SuperSpeed of up to 5Gbps (3Gbps for the e-SATA port). Transfer your data in just minutes, instead of hours and have more time to do what you want.

Ease of use.
Instead of complicated screws to work with, our docking station just snaps in place, holding your hard drive firmly and securely. The LED indicator with two colors reveals power status and data activity. What's more, a power button lets you disconnect to protect your data when not in use, instead of unplugging the power cable.

For optimal use.
• Your drive cannot be accessed via both eSATA and USB 3.0 ports at the same time. If both are connected, only the eSATA-connected computer will be recognized and interact with the drive.
• Do not attempt to remove your HDD or SSD device while it is active. Please power off the docking station before removing.
• The following Seagate SATA drive models will require a firmware upgrade, downloadable from the Seagate official site, before use:
ST3000DM001/9YN166/3TB
ST2500DM001/9YN16L/2.5TB
ST2000DM001/9YN164/2TB
ST1000DM003/9YN162/1TB
ST500DM005
• Note for Mountain Lion (10.8) users: If you are experiencing formatting problems, please note that this is unrelated to our dock's performance. You may try reformatting your disk to the FAT32 format on using another operating system.

The first impression you get after receiving this device, even before opening the box, is it feels heavy and substantial. Included in the box, is the docking station, an AC adapter, a USB cable and a SATA cable. I lifted out the docking station and again was surprised by its weight and solidity considering the low asking price. A typical use for the docking station would be to connect hard drives removed from other equipment (that had perhaps failed) so that you can still access your files.

The docking station is dual interface and automatically chooses the appropriate connectivity based on whichever cable is connected. As the SATA and USB 3.0 (backwards compatible to 2.0) interfaces are industry standard, there are no special drivers that need to be installed for most operating systems (e.g. Windows 7 or 8). It truly is plug-and-play.

There is a power button on the docking station. This is useful to ensure you are not removing or connecting a hard drive while it is still in the process of writing. A power light indicates a connected drive is active, and it flashes to a different colour to signify disc activity.

Docking the hard drives themselves are very easy. By default there is a hole opening that is exactly the right size for a 2.5" hard drive/SSD. It is incredibly simple to drop a drive into the slot and it easily finds its home with the connectors at the bottom . I will upload a picture to show what a docked drive looks like. To dock a 3.5" hard drive, simply push the springy flap surround the 2.5" slot, opening a full 3.5" size hole. Once again it is very easy to dock with no difficulty or significant pressure required to mate the drive with the connectors at the bottom of the slot.

I ran some performance tests with an SSD.

For years I've been pulling the side off of PC cases in order to connect hard drives to pull data off/erase them/clone disks.
That works, but it can be a chore at times.

The Anker HDD dock is quite impressive, well packaged, and made with decent quality plastics it feels like it will last unlike some of the cheaper docks I've seen around.
With both eSATA and USB 3.0 ports, which is good to see as my main pc has eSATA on the front panel (not something that is used much until now) I've already wiped a number of disks and had no problems at all with the HDD dock. It's worked perfectly with no issues to report.

There are really no weak points here, though I would like possibly a slightly longer power lead add another 30cm and it would be perfect. The main unit has rubber feet on the base which helps it grip on a table and reduce vibrations, the cables are of good quality it's a far better made unit than some other offerings I've seen around. It's well worth having the eSATA there as it removes any kind of bottle neck, USB is useful for plug and play too and working on various types of computer, no issues with older USB 2.0 ports either but data transfer will be slower as expected. A must have for anyone doing pc repairs/jobs or general use, and the price is very fair overall for what you get.

I am very happy with this now I have finally got it to work.
The esata cable they supply needs a couple of mm trimming off it before it will make a proper contact with the card in the back of the PC.
Until this was done the computer would not recognise the unit at all.
I got this solution off the net so it is clear that many people have the same issue.
I should add that I don't think it is only the leads which come with this unit which have the problem but nevertheless I can't for the life of me see why they don't re-spec the cables given the number of people who experience the problem.
I've had the unit for several months now and it seems to work just fine.

I really like peripherals that feel as if they could survive lives little knocks. Some stuff feels like it will fall apart if you sneeze to violently. Not so the Anka Uspeed. This really does have a brick-like quality to it that makes you believe that this could not only survive falling off the desk, but falling down a mountainside. So it would have been easy for it to look brick-like as well, but the slight angle of the hard drive does, somehow, prevent that.

But the most important thing is the performance. And it's no slouch at all. My system is too old to have USB3, but it does have eSATA. Measurement of sequential transfer gives read and write speeds of 180MB/s - which I think may be a limitation of the drive (3TB Seagate Baracuda). The best thing is that it is hot-swappable. With my old dock I had to reboot to get Windows to recognise when I'd replaced the disk. The Uspeed has no such problems (which is handy when doing duplicate backups).

Why only 4 stars? Because the power cable is too short.

Update:
Anker shipped me a replacement item even though I did not intend to go back to this product, after testing I've found it to work as expected and it is simple and easy to use. The first item I got shipped did not have the correct cables but the replacement did have all the cables as described.

I can definitely recommend this product and the excellent service by Anker which go above and beyond to make sure that the customer is happy.

Previous review:
I just got this delivered and it doesn't power on so it is being returned ASAP.
I will not be getting the same one as replacement since as well as not working, it had an incorrect cable, a SATA cable instead of eSATA so it would have been unusable unless I bought an additional cable, and according to the packaging it supports HHDs and SSDs up to max. 3TB which is not what the description of this item states.
