4.0 out of 5 stars How long is that track ! 13 July 2006
By L. Mist
Format:Audio CD
This CD has been compiled by the same people, who have brought us the very wonderful 12"/80s collections, so now I don't have to trawl through sealed boxes of 12"s, to play my favourite over produced songs of the 80s. For that I will be forever grateful.
This CD could be considered a prequel to the 80s collection. It ranges from pop, disco and new wave. In an era when disco was at its height and tracks were at their longest (Check out the 16.46 minutes of Love to love you baby. Can anyone actually dance to a track that long?).
Highlights for me include:
Sparks: Beat the clock, a collaboration with Giorgio Moroder, the disco legend.
M: Pop musik, a classic pop tune from 1979.
The Normal: Warm Leatherette, later covered by Grace Jones.
Cerrone: Supernature, A classic dance track with the worst lyrics ever.
Diana Ross: Love Hangover, she can't quite equal Donna Summer in the heavy breathing department, comes across as more asthmatic, but still, a masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'IT'S DIFFICULT NOW TO IMAGINE HOW... 22 Oct 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
...dominant dance music became in the mid to late 70's.Central to it was the birth of the 12" single.'
Thus reads the card insert for Disc 1. Disc 2 insert tells us that the first chart rap record was
Sugarhill's 'Rappers's Delight'. And to think I only bought this cd for the music not expecting a brief
history of how disco evolved into dance followed by new wave. So, on to the music that persuaded me to
buy this 12" compelation:

Disc 1
Donna Summer - Love To Love You Baby 16.46
A Taste Of Honey - Boogie Ooogie Oogie 4.35

Disc 2
Cerrone - Supernature 9.40
MFSB feat The Three Degrees - TSOP 5.41

Disc 3
M - Pop Muzik (Long Version 4.53
Grace Jones - La Vie En Rose
Extended Mix - Tom Moulton 7.26
The Flying Lizards - Money 5.43

and those are just the ones I wanted to replace my vinyl copies!

5.0 out of 5 stars superb compilation 22 Oct 2011
By meeky
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This very modestly priced box of three cds has a great list of tracks with next to no duffers. Some tracks were hard to find even on vinyl. this gets quite a lot of play in my house because each disc has a different genre of music but at the same time coming together as coherent whole, not a disparate group of songs lumped together with enough rare ones to guarantee its sale. Genuinely a very listenable set and well worth the price, and some.

So I have to admit to loving this sort of stuff, late Seventies 12"s & this album has a more "eclectic" mix of tracks. Discs 1 & 2 are usual disco tracks, although the tracks selected are probably a little more unusual than most.

Almost obligatory Chic tracks "Everybody Dance", Anita Ward "Ring My Bell" & Edwin Starr "Contact". Bit more unusual is the !6.45 version of "Love To Love You Baby", the 9.35 version of "Vertigo/Relight My Fire", 9.41 of "Supernature" (unusual to see that pop up anywhere on a compilation) & 14.32 of the fantastic "Rapper's Delight" - (which the kids will only know from the brilliant Honda advert)

However - disc 3! Just scan that track listing - did you ever think you'd see P.I.L. on the same track listing as Shalamar? Ian Dury & Andrea True Connection on the same album? Disc 3 is just plain bizarre - I never even knew that there was a Slavic Dance Version of Lena Lovich's "Luck Number". Truth be told, some tracks are not 12" versions, just the album version (or, in the case of "Are Friends Electric? the single version), some of the 12"s follow the typical 12" methodology of the time ie. just tape loop the rhythm section till fade, but some of the tracks are just delightful - "Warm Leatherette" & "Supernature" being particular favourites.

I have a few of these 12"/remix compilations, & on the whole, most have a few outstanding tracks, the majority being "fillers". This collection on the other hand has to contain one of the best track listings I've seen - that added to the fact that I paid less than a fiver for my copy means that it was an essential purchase. Skip over "Take It To The Bank" though!!
