Don't be put off by the name; Chicken Lips are as silicone-pumped as Lola Ferrari, so if you've yet to be hauled to your feet by one of their wonky house odysseys, then Extended Play is a good place to start. "Electric Universe", a childish romp through vibrato-choked synths and the foggiest of echo chambers is a tedious opener, but the acid-dub effect is put to good use elsewhere, creating a kind of organic progressive house that's mostly live, tight and never quite what it seems.
Straight clubland arrangements are thrown out of the window, alongside any orthodox way of presenting a dance record. Maybe Chicken Lips' strange concoction of spaced-out skunk-funk simply has a mind of its own? Certainly "Feast Of Freaks" dispenses with a bassline altogether, returning throbbing and disjointed like some crazed early 1980s New York disco record: think Talking Heads meets Yoko Ono. Elsewhere, "Many Members" is great Kraftwerk-style techno--the sort of track you expect to crop up on International Deejay Gigolo's roster, plus there's a wealth of equally inspired dubby madness to take your pick from.
