Product Description

Review

'A rich, deep and mesmerizing novel that simultaneously projects a sense of casual grace and of inexorability ... Stevenson has an incredible talent; she writes like a very old soul, with an exquisitely-tuned Catholic sensitivity to sin, guilt and sexual obsession' Jay McInerney --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Guardian

‘Stevenson is an exceptionally talented writer...she dissects her characters with eloquent, dispassionate attention to detail. Literature? Bang on the nose’ --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This looked like it could be interesting.

"A deftly plotted, highly suspenseful, and astutely observed morality tale, Exposure explores the dangerous pleasure of offering charity, the effects of deceit and shame on a rigidly complacent family, and the nature of love among family and friends."

Unfortunately it wasn't. the characters were flat and beige, the situations straight from a tabloid, and an all too convenient ending.

pixel perfect 2 Jan 2008
Format:Paperback
This sharply cut novel is diamond in the rough of today's fearful literature. It echoes Fitzgerald's 'The Beautiful and the Damned' in its themes and in its bravely distilled prose. The exposure of the title is a microscopic examination of the lies and sacrifices it costs to maintain an ultimately worthless public image in the narcissistic moral whirlpool of upper middle class England. The writing constantly demands respect. This, like the author's first novel, 'An Empty Room' is a pleasure to read.

Simply superb 16 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
I'm not usually one for writing reviews here, but I clicked on this link to double check the spelling of the writer's name and was astonished to see the negative reviews.

The best way I can describe it is to say it is in the style of Jonathan Franzen, but with a distinctly British flavour. Not to say it is at all derivative, but the depiction of the unravelling of a dysfunctional family several times brought The Corrections and Freedom to mind.

It's a common complaint about contemporary British literature that we are being left behind by the Americans. There are various theories as to why this may be, but one is that because - in contrast to the "great American novels" - none of our writers are trying to write "the great British novel". Next time I hear someone complain that the Brits are not producing excellent literature that somehow encapsulates the nation at a particular period, I will produce this novel as a counter-example. Very highly recommended.
