Book Description

26 May 2011

'That night he did something so controversial that he'd rather be suspected of murder than tell anyone what he was really doing. What could possibly be worse than that?'

Trainee journalist Annika Bengtzon has secured a summer placement at Sweden's biggest tabloid newspaper. She's desperate for this to be her big break, although manning the tip-off phoneline isn't quite what she had in mind...

Until a caller tells her that the naked body of a young woman has been found in a nearby cemetery.

As she pieces together details of the young woman's life, Annika stumbles across video footage that places the main suspect hundreds of miles from the crime scene, right at the time of the murder.

Are the police looking for the wrong man? There is suddenly far more at stake here than Annika's career, and the more questions she asks, the more she leaves herself dangerously exposed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Meet feisty Annnika Bengtzon 23 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
Annika Bengtzon is a trainee journalist on a summer placement at Sweden's biggest tabloid newspaper. She has been put in charge of the tip-off hotline and when a caller reports a dead body in a local cemetery, Annika follows it up with all the enthusiasm of a young person who really wants to make her mark in journalism.

Who is the young woman, why is she in the cemetery and what has happened to her?

Annika wastes no time in interviewing passers-by, friends of the girl and her work colleagues. She is hot on the heels of a good story.

And then things begin to go wrong - the story is reported differently by rival news reporters. There is a big smell of a cover-up and Annika, as the youngest reporter, suddenly finds herself marginalised and scapegoated.

What is going on?

I enjoyed this story - Annika is a young heroine at the beginning of her career, and she reminded me a little of Sara Paretsky's VI Warshawski and Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone: feisty, irrepressible and with a keen sense of justice.

The story also has added interest as, in a postscript to the book, Liza Marklund writes that the plot is developed from one of her own experiences as a journalist when her own desire to uncover truth came into conflict with the desire of more powerful people to keep certain truths hidden. I felt that this added credibility and depth to the story.

If you enjoy crime fiction, I think that you will enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cracking read 18 Nov 2011
By Carole
Format:Paperback
This is the second book that I've read by this author and I found that once again there was such a great feel for how it is to live and work in Stockholm. In this book Annika, the main character, is a temp at the newspaper and isn't sure what her future holds. There has been a murder, and she gets the initial tip off so has been looking into it to write it up for the paper. All the way through there are mysterious diary entries at the start of the chapters. You don't know whose they are but they're quite chilling and you wonder how they're connected to the murder.
The conclusion to Annika's involvement with the investigation is excellent, but the part where you find out the significance of the diary entries took my breath away. I really did not see that coming.
A cracking read. I think Marklund may be a new favourite author.

4.0 out of 5 stars caveat emptor 16 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
This is a fine (crime) novel, but fans of the author beware - you have probably already read it. It has already been published in English as 'Studio Sex' in the US and 'Studio 69' in Britain
