Book Description

3 Nov 2006
A humorous, hard hitting, guide to better preaching.
Pacey, practical, passionate and a protest against against poor preaching.

‘Why do so many preachers make the most exciting news in the world sound so boring?’ That is the question driving this unusual book. In a series of honest, personal and humorous letters the author also answers the question, ‘What will it take to inspire great preaching for the 21st century?’

The insights from 2000 years of preaching history and twenty years of personal preaching experience across three continents are applied to the needs of the 21st century. This is a humorous yet hard-hitting guide to explosive modern preaching.

‘If I could have only one book on preaching it would be this one.’
Robin Parry, author of Worshipping Trinity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be sure to read it first! 25 July 2007

Absolutely brilliant. I've read a good many books on preaching. This is one of the best -- faithful to the Bible, thoroughly practical and full of sound common sense. I urge all preachers and would-be preachers to buy a copy and read it carefully before daring to enter the pulpit.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent book 7 May 2009
This is the most refreshing and useful book i have read on preaching. It is very readable- if you are bored with technical 'how to do it' approach then this will be a breath of fresh air.

This is my favourite book on preaching because it is brutally honest about how bad a lot of preaching is and then sets about exploring how God's truth can be more consistently delivered with life changing power.

Without pulling its punches, it is graciously written. It is written as a series of letters. The letters have the voice of a friend writing from a distant land who loves you but whose travels have given them a fresh perspective on your life and your work of preaching and who loves you too much not to tell you the truth even if that hurts.

It moves between narrow technical questions, like "Should we use powerpoint", to broader issues of the heart, like "How do we as preachers in the busyness of life find the space to meet with God?"

Nobody is going to agree with every word he says but that is part of the fun of this book. It makes you think afresh. Better still it gets to your heart, so at the end of reading it I committed myself again to making sure that the Good News of the Gospel is a gripping I can make it whilst trusting the Holy Spirit to do the rest.
