Mark has a BSc in biochemistry and a PhD in molecular genetics, and trained as a research scientist. However, in finding that he enjoyed the lecturing side of life more than lab work, he moved into teaching. He wrote his first textbook whilst in his first year of teaching. Slightly oddly, for a biochemist, that book was a physics book because he didn't like any of the physics textbooks on the market at the time. This photocopied effort did however get the attention of a publishing company - Longman.
He has now written for most of the major UK publishers (Pearson - including Edexcel, Heinemann & Longman), Nelson Thornes, Hodder Education and Collins Education. He has also acted as series editor on a number of publications, including the hugely successful Exploring Science.
Hobbies include travel, skiing, photography and writing classical music (or as some would describe it 'creaking gate music'). He has made occasional appearances on television as a life science presenter and also undertakes voice-over work.
