good but dissapointing as a whole 14 Aug 2005
By Corriena L. Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This album has some really good songs, but as an album from this band it is disappointing. The albums from this band (from Denmark) literally get progressively less interesting and exciting. The older ones are their best. Unfortunately, their 1996 EP "Chicken, Eh?" (which is their best, but for some ridiculously stupid reason out of print and not re-pressed) and their 1997 album "Knee" (their second best) are not available here and Knee has to be ordered from the band. Prima Ballerina and In My Shoe are great songs, but the album as a whole is decent, though a letdown from their previous masterpieces. They also do more electronics in this album, again a letdown from their previous rawness and miscelanous percussion that used to fill their music.

What their older material had that is lacking on this album is less restraints and more wild fun and craziness. Exploring Beauty is too reserved and doesn't have their old energy, power, wildness and creativity. Their older stuff has been compared to Nuclear Rabbit and Mr. Bungle, but although there are similarities this band is actually completely original, heavier than either of those 2 bands. Their older stuff had more tempo changes, cartoonish/carnivalesque vocals mixed with death metal, with good vocal range and excellent drumming and percussion. This album is more "normal." Another thing I'd rather they do is sing in their native Danish, as music is always more interesting if it is in a non-English language.

This CD is a complete departure from their far better earlier style, and much much less creative and more simple and straight forward. Usually if something is simple and straightforward that means bland and boring, yet this album actually has a few good songs.

p.s.- what in the world are "voting buttons" that CDnow keeps saying I'm not doing on my reviews? If CDnow would actually EXPLAIN what they mean and not be so confusing it would be much easier.
