Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Before Mississippi-born Al Green became a Reverend and moved primarily into gospel music, throughout the 1970s he released a series of classy, laid-back Southern soul albums. Explore Your Mind is one of the strongest, the result of a fruitful collaboration with songwriter/producer Willie Mitchell. The record is awash with a sense of warm nostalgia and lost innocence. It is also the sound of a hopeful, yet vulnerable lover; from the lilting melody and loving ache of "Hangin' On", to the youthful crooning of "School Days". Green sprinkles his songs with religious and spiritual metaphor, but in a way that is never heavy-handed. He also laces his deft vocal delivery with a self-deprecating humour, particularly on the funky hit "Take Me To The River", where he makes the fact that a woman "stole my money and my cigarettes" actually sound pleasurable. --Lucy O'Brien

5.0 out of 5 stars DAMN! This man can sing.......... 16 May 2001
Format:Audio CD
This is the 4th Al Green album I have purchased and while it may be more upbeat than the 'Lets stay together's' of this world it remains top drawer stuff. The songs have so many hooks that you will be humming them away while at work. Check out the track 'Hangin On' as this represents one of Mr Greens masterpieces and soooooo relaxes you. Other highlights are 'God blessed our love' for that mellow gospel vibe , 'Sha-la-la' and 'Take me to the river' are also unforgetable.

Buy it today! 5 stars for a worthy album! Nice one Al!

5.0 out of 5 stars Explore Al Green 15 Mar 2001
By Thomas Magnum - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Al Green Explores Your Mind contains some of the most spiritual singing of his secular career. "Take Me To The River" combines his two styles to the maximum with its Memphis soul sound and spiritual lyrics. "Sha-La-La" is a great song and was his last top ten pop single. His version of Chuck Berry's "School Days" is quite good as is "The City" and "One Nite Stand". Explores Your Mind was the last truly great r&b record Rev. Green made as after its release he started moving into his religious vocation full time.

4.0 out of 5 stars UNDERRATED 23 April 2003
By Justin Dippel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
THIS ALBUM IS FOR HARDCORE AL GREEN FANS. OF THE 9 SONGS ONLY 2 WERE HITS, "SHA-LA-LA" AND "TAKE ME TO THE RIVER", BUT I CAN LISTEN TO EVERY SONG ON IT. SONGS LIKE ONE NITE STAND, SCHOOL DAYS, AND STAY WITH ME FOREVER ARE GREAT SOUL SONGS. THIS MIGHT NOT BE AS GOOD AS THE CALL ME ALBUM OR THE I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU ALBUM BUT IT IS A VERY SOLID ALBUM.

4.0 out of 5 stars worth tracks one and six 20 Mar 2002
By Davivid - Published on Amazon.com

al green is god,no doubt about it, but he didn't always sing the best songs. "explores your mind" is a great example: of course "take me to the river" is a classic up-tempo gospel-tinged hit, but it's not my favorite. i like al green best when he's in that sexy mid-tempo love groove that made his best songs like "tired of being alone" so timeless. this album has two of those: "sha-la-la (make me happy)" and "i'm hooked on you." the price of the CD is worth it for just these two songs. i mean , as great as al is, i really don't care for "the city," nor do i care for most of the songs on this one. anyway, if you love al's voice--and who doesn't?!--you might not be as picky as me.
either way, the cover and title are cool, and al is, yes, god.
