Explorers Wanted was to a certain extent a decent book, although the story kept getting broken up by puzzles and questions, which I enjoyed, but would rather have the story following on. It made you tune out of the story and then have to tune back in. I think Chapman put them in to try and make you remember the facts the book had told you, which is a good idea, but as I have already said it breaks the story up. Some of the facts he tells you are very interesting, but also disgusting. Before I read the book I thought I might like to go on a safari to the African grasslands, but not now no get bitten by Tsetse flies or being wriggled into by the worms the bilharzias snails inject for me. No Thank You Very Much. I'd much rather snuggle down on my sofa and read a book. Almost everything pout there is against you. The Animals, the creepy-crawlies, the sun, the eco-system. Almost everything. I think the Smoke-that-thunders or Mosai-aa-Tunya was a good incentive to get you to the end, all in all I think Chapman has written a interesting book about his time as an explorer.

My 9-year-old son absolutely loves Simon Chapman's books, and I can see why. They are crammed with exciting information about the author's expeditions to the world's remotest place, and it's all presented in a highly readable journal-style format. The neat drawings are done by the author, too, and there are fun quizzes dotted through the book.
This 'On Safari' book has lots of interesting info about living in the bush, essential kit, how to set up camp, how to speak Swahili (really!), and how to deal with all that wildlife.
The facts are beautifully presented in a style that kids find very appealing. We met Simon Chapman at a book signing and he has really been to these places so he knows what he's talking about! Buy with confidence.
