My 10 year old brought this home from his school library, and we love it. The author is excellent at describing what to expect in a place like the Amazon, which animals, insects, tribes, vegetation will be encountered. he sets up scenarios of a days tasks and asks the reader to decide what is important for survival. for instance, I now know, not to tie your hammock up to a tree with perfect leaves, a "Devils Pole", it is probably home to thousands of fire ants which will attack anything that touches the tree, and sting the skin "like pin pricks of fire". If stuff like that doesn't get the imagination of kids going I don't know what will.
