The Gear4 Explorer-SP works brilliantly, just as it did in store, and my iPod Classic works on it too. The remote control is responsive and the 3D sound is superior to the Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere v2 Black Dock for iPod and iPhone (which I also have - but the Logitech has the annoying habit of cutting off abruptly and this fault is known to Logitech but no solution has been provided). The Gear4 Explorer-SP works so well that I am tempted to get another one!
And you get quite a lot in the box, there's a nice carrying sleeve to protect the high gloss finish of the unit, and the instruction manual sells the GEAR4 short as the contents do include a 3.5mm to 3.5mm lead to connect to non-Apple MP3 players. It's got other neat touches such as a removeable battery.
I liked also the individual cradles for the differing products, the cradle for the iTouch fitted snuggly (I presume the others are equally well made). It can't go wrong and no little springy bits to ping off under the sofa after a few months use.
The basics are operable via a remote control, which is slightly expense spared, but at the price point that's not a complaint.
It sounds good, it's quite loud at low distortions, and as I've already indicated, it looks good too. Great for parties, not so hot for Bach's cello suites, but I don't think that's what it's for.
It's a nice product.
I've only tested it with an iPhone 3Gs and an external player (plugged in via the Aux in) so far and it works well - the remote will control almost all the ipod app features BUT the ipod app must be running on screen for all the remote features to work (including up/down the menu, different menu/playlist selections etc), otherwise you can only control volume, mute, prev/next track and shuffle/repeat. The same is true if you have screen lock on - only the basic track and volume controls work. This isn't really too much of a problem though. With an external device plugged in via the AUX in, the remote will still handle on/off, volume, mute and the 3D sound.
My iPhone charges pretty quickly when it's docked but ONLY as long as the dock is plugged in to the mains - it won't charge from the dock's battery. The battery life is so far a little shorter than the advertised 8 hours, but by my reckoning not by much, though I guess that depends on the volume you're using!
My biggest niggle though it that you still need to use device-specific dock adapters that slot into the gap around the dock connector - every time you change your device, e.g. your friend has a nano or touch with them, you need to fish out and change the adapter, and there's also no support for the back of whatever device you have docked - the connector is the only point of physical support. I've seen far more elegant solutions that don't require this, e.g. the Phillips Fidelio, which uses a lightly sprung dock connector and also supports the back of whatever device you plug in, so why manufacturers still insist on using this clunky solution is a mystery.
All that said though, it's a great device, perhaps overpriced and a little heavier than expected, but sturdy, well made and with good sound. Oh, and it does come with a lightly padded zip case for the device itself (but not the mains adapter).
