Format:Audio CD
While not as immeadiately appealing to me as Don't Look Down /Paid Edrych I lawr / Moon Songs, this seeps into your psyche with repeated listens.
As the title suggests, Explorer takes the listener on a musical journey around the world, encompassing a range of flavours, styles and instruments, all sung with Cerys' inimitable vocals.
From the fantastically titled How Can You Say So Little When You Talk So Much (how many of us know at least one person who that could have been written for?) to the charming Ca The Yowes you get Indian, Spanish / Moorish, Peruvian (?) and of course Celtic.
If Sweet Magnolia had been the only track on here, it would still have been worth the admission price. So good.
I also like Galleon, Into The Derelict Night, Connemara Cradle Song, Eneth Gadd Ei Wrthod and the previously mentioned Ca The Yowes.
A nice collection of songs which are either written or co-written by Cerys, or her arrangements of traditional texts.

A friend bought the album and the first time I heard it I thought it was a bit odd. It's not as instantly likeable as Cerys' previous albums and I thought she'd gone a bit far down the folky-hippy route and I had resigned myself to disliking it. How wrong I was.
For the next few days I kept humming tunes in my head that I had no idea where they'd come from. The next time I visited my friend and he played a few tracks from the album again they instantly felt like old favourites and I ended up ordering the album there and then.
The album is made up of both songs that Cerys has collected over the years on her travels around the world, and newly written songs. The thing I found surprising was that you can't actually tell which songs are oldies and which are new. The album flows from song to song very beautifully and the selection of instruments chosen really improve the songs - they haven't just been used because they are different or odd but because they add depth and bring something to each song.
I highly recommend this album. Buy it now, you won't regret it!

After loving Don't Look Down, I was so happy to find Explorer. Another absolute gem from Cerys Matthews!
Just listening to the different instruments involved is astounding.
Seek it out - Check out Sweet Magnolia and Who Fears the Garden... Fantastic!
