Prof. Shahin's book is a welcome new text for an elementary discussion of mathematical models for a freshman-level course. The text by Sandefur is the only real competitor. Shahin's text is more up-to-date and somewhat more advanced mathematically. This text would also be good for mathematics majors at the freshman level.
It is well-written and quite suitable for self-study. The exercises are not difficult, but do extend further the discussion and explorations in the text.
The mathematics in this text is more sophisticated and complete than what one will find in the Sandefur text. Thus, Prof. Shahin introduces the students to some sophisticated linear algebra, including the concepts of eigenvalues, dominant eigenvalue, Markov chains, second order linear difference equations.

It should be noted that some of the analysis of some of the models can be done using Excel spreadsheets, if one does not have MATLAB available on their computer.

I recommend this excellently written text.
